So, tell me about Minot

It's looking like Minot is in my future, gang. This will be a pretty big change from California but I'm ready for a change so here we go.

What's it like? What's there to do? I'm not a big nightlife guy generally so the lack thereof doesn't bother me, but I hope there's nice stuff to do outside once it stops being forbiddingly cold.

Also I know housing is expensive but are there nearby towns that are less impacted and maybe cheaper? I'll have a car and I don't mind a commute at all.

I did, and they seem great, but they don't hire new grads in the ER which is where I really wanna be.

Thats a plausible reason. I guess I just wouldnt move there due to the cost, even bismarck is still a little pricey vs pay. minot is supposed to be worse.

yeah, I've heard not great things but I am from California so at least I'm used to housing being absurd. As long as I'm warm in bed and I've got the internet, I'll get by!

Well, I just got back from going out there to find housing and maybe I can help out some other people who are considering Minot for work. The other big thread on Minot is full of panicky handwringing about the lack of housing etc etc.

I'm from coastal California so I guess high rents aren't that scary to me, but I found a nice 2 bedroom apartment that is pet friendly for $800 a month, utilities paid except electricity. I can either rent that other room out or use it as a study or (more likely) just put empty boxes in there and pretend it doesn't exist.

This winter is apparently very mild for North Dakota, when I was there it was about 40 degrees during the day, down to about 18 degrees at night. I think once spring comes, it will actually be kind of a pretty area. It seems to have lots of rivers, wetlands, lakes...I saw some cool birds and a badger! I hope there's good hiking and stuff, I think there probably is.

The town itself, from what I saw, isn't exactly New Orleans or San Francisco in terms of having a distinctive character. Lots of chain restaurants but again I am sure there is some cool stuff there that I intend to find when I move out there for keeps.

The hospital seems really nice! I don't formally start for about a month so I didn't really want to interrupt anyone ("Hi, I'm Burtis, I'll be working here in a month... well, see ya" would seem kinda awkward) but all the employees I saw seemed happy, the building was full of light with lots of windows, and I just got the impression it was a really good facility.

If anyone cares, I can continue updating this thread once I'm out there for keeps (or at least 2 years) much like DatMurse has done with his Bismarck thread.

tonight is -9 and tomorrow night is -19.

Sure, it's brisk! When Lewis and Clark wintered there at Fort Mandan, it got down to like -30.

In the negatives...! Hoo, I am not sure how I'm gonna handle my very first North Dakota winter without even visiting this state before deciding to move there. I don't think I have an idea of what I'm getting myself into. And there's the wind chill...

Yeah, I am moving out there. Just made the decision a few days ago. Not Bismarck though. Goin' to Fargo. Should be there next week!

Wow, congrats! Apparently Fargo is a cool place, I kinda wish I was there instead of here but too late now eh?
