So, So Very Confused!! Long! :)

So, really and truly, I need some kind of advice.

Im in 3rd semster of an ASN program and with reality looming in front of me, Ive hit a wall.

May grads in my school are encouraged to have have jobs by the Dec/Jan before they graduate, that means in 3 months I will be expected to have apps in, interviews lined up and contract signed by January. Also, theres a sign on bonus to students that are hired before February and I really want that $$. The only problem is I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHERE I WANT TO WORK!!! (department wise)

I am currently a surgical tech and know that I do not want to stay in the OR, but thats as far as Ive gotten. Ive done Peds and maternity last semester, and am doing Med-Surg this semester and nothing peaks my interest. I have yet to go to a tele floor (thats in 5 weeks) and Critical care and psych are next semster but I will be expected to have my job lined up by then. Critical care slightly peaks my interest but I cant get there til Im already expected to have a job. LOL. Make sense? :p

I dont even know what kind of advanced practice I want to get into if any, so that doesnt help guide me either.

I know most will say just stick out med-surg til I figure it out...Im just not sure.

Any advice will be welcome.

i would love to have your problems lol

as a fourth semester student i will be honest with you.... you really won't have as many choices as you think.... in first semester instructors make you think the world is your ouster... reality is employers will hire you where they need you. period. secondly, you are competing against all the other 100s and 1000s of new grads for hospital positions too...

my suggestion, apply to every position possible, interview with all of them, and do not make your mind up until you have gotten job offers. does this sound familiar??? it should. the same people that made getting into nursing school so difficult are the same people graduating from nursing school.... so it can be similar to applying for nursing school.

on a brighter note, in some cases you will have an edge working in the hospital setting already, in other cases you won't because maybe so-an-so does not like you.. etc. in any case, i do not suggest that you limit yourself with your so-called likes and dislikes unless you are able to talk to the right people to land the position of your dreams... :twocents:

pssst.... btw, the real shortage in nursing is on the med-surg floors (the ones no one likes because they are too poorly ran and there is too much drama), ltc (poorly run and drama), and home health, which i do not know why.. maybe it is like the others? take care.

The hospital I am in has a great new grad program that they give preference to my associated schools new grads, so there is a good chance that a variety of jobs will be available come time to apply.

I am also obligated to this hospital since they are paying for my schooling, so LTC would be out of the question.

This honestly does keep me up at night! I know this problem may be minor compared with some of the real issues on here....I just need to hear different point of views. :)

I just dont want to be "stuck" somewhere I hate...and of course, they look down on transferring departments before youve been there a whole year.
