So bummed & frustrated

Published

I am feeling pretty discouraged lately in starting my Nursing Career.

I was so excited when I thought I found the right school and program, then I found out that school was way to expensive and many many bad reviews and even people saying they were looking into lawsuits. So I said, forget it and decided to go to one of the CC here in my area.

I had completed 21 out of 24 general ed courses at University of Phoneix. I stopped going there because they too were too expensive and were trying to charge me over 2k for a class I never even took. It just didnt see right and I didnt want to waste anymore time there and get further in debt with them.

Well, I signed up at the CC and need to get my transcript so they can transfer my units from UOP so I can just focus on the pre reqs for the nursing program before starting that in January. I called UOP and asked to get my transcript mailed or if I can just come by and pick it up and they proceed to tell me that they cant give me a transcript because of the balance on the account. I argued back and forth with the lady about how they are still seriously charging me for a class i NEVER even took or signed up for and she just kept saying until a payment is made I cant get my transcript!! I dont know what to do now!!!!!!!! Not only did, Im hearing from prior University of Phoenix students who tried to transfer to a new college and the credits werent accepted anywhere!!

OMG now I am stuck having to start everything all over and work on my General Ed first which is going to hold me back from starting the Nursing Program in January. I am really bummed out!!!! I feel like my DREAM of being a nurse just keeps getting shattered by all these bumbs in the road!!! I dont know what to do!!

First of all, I'm sorry you're going through this. My husband just finished his degree at University of Phoenix and while his experience was a good one, I was watching the whole process like a hawk. I'm very distrustful of the for-profit school model and even though I consider my husband's story successful, I would recommend against that route 99% of the time. If he didn't have tuition reimbursement through work and the GI bill, there's no way we could ever afford or justify the cost.

Anyway, that being said, I think you're on the right track by going to your local CC. What you've heard about the credits transferring may, unfortunately, be very true but it's worth pursuing in order to hopefully get something out of the time and money you spent there. Who did you talk to at UoP about your transcripts? I seem to remember my husband working closely with an advisor on his schedule when he was there - can you contact someone like that who could work with you on the issue of the untaken class you're being charged for?

Don't get me wrong, there are some good things about the school and those were reasons I signed up. I just wish I would have done more research before I did because it just wasnt the place for me.

I had an academic counselor and financial aid advisor assinged as do most students I believe, but the problem was they kept changing like every other month it seemed like. I think they mixed up my information and I have been trying to speak with whoever I can about this but all they keep telling me is to pay the bill. I am NOT paying for something I didnt take thats ridiculous and now they wont give me my transcript? Its crazy to me but I guess its just how they work. But a few friends of mine that actually were able to get a transcript were told the credits werent acceptable, so that kind of sucks as well.

I just cant believe that these private schools can get away with so much stuff as they do. Its not just UOP, its all these other private colleges that Ive looked into as well.

I know that a CC is the best choice for me because it is a legitamite college, the credits are legitamite and all of that, I am just upset that I have to start from scratch but I will do it if I have to of course.

well if you're going to a CC you will have a lot less classes to take as prereqs but even the UofP commercials say that credits earned are not likely to be transferrable. Its better this way. Plus CC is loads cheaper ;)
