SLU Accelerated BSN 2014

Published

Hello,

I applied to SLU's 2014 Accelerated BSN program and am waiting nervously for some sort of response from SLU. I know it is early in the acceptance process, but wanted to start a 'thread' to help aggregate acceptance responses from SLU.

Thanks!

Gotcha. Yeah I'm about 25min away so it's going to be a bit of a drive for me. I would check out areas around highway 44. It's easy to get to campus from 44.

25 minutes isnt that bad. thanks, ill definitely check areas around 44. what was your undergrad degree btw?

I just finished my psychology degree actually! What about you???

nice! what school did you go to? i finished my health science degree last june

Oh cool! I went to Maryville University. It's a small university in St. Louis. What about you?

i went to cal state east bay

Are there any financial aid or scholarships opportunities? I applied FAFSA but I don't know if that helps.

There are scholarships. I was told they range from $1000 to &10,000 and a 3.4 gpa is competitive to receive one. Otherwise fafsa and private loans are what most people do.

Hey all, I see lots of questions regarding where to live while attending SLU. I've lived in Saint Louis City for the past four years in several neighborhoods (South City, Downtown, Soulard, McKinley Heights) and all are within 5-10 minutes of SLU.

The following link will hopefully help you understand the layout of neighborhoods in St. Louis: https://stlouis-mo.gov/government/departments/planning/documents/upload/CitywideNeighborhoodMap_TabloidSzRev.pdf.

SLU is located in an area called Midtown (#37). There are apartments and houses to rent in this area and SLU has done a great job turning around the vibe of the area. I highly recommend not living anywhere north of Midtown.

East of Midtown is the Central West End, or CWE (#38). I've noticed someone has already posted about residency in the CWE and it's quite costly. You will definitely be paying for a prime spot in St. Louis. The CWE is well known for great restaurants, boutiques, and lovely gated streets/communities. Great place to live if you can afford it.

West of Midtown is Downtown West (#36) and is gradually being developed but not a lot here yet. Further west is Downtown (#35). Great place to live: sports arenas, concerts, restaurants/bars, and lots of access to public transportation. SLU recently opened their new law school downtown and now offers a FREE shuttle service from the law school to the main campus. I'm not sure if you've checked yet, but parking at SLU is rather costly. Downtown living offers many lofts with high-end amenities like gyms, swimming pools, etc. If you choose Downtown, I recommend not looking north of Washington Avenue (Wash Ave.) or west of Tucker.

South of Midtown, I'm not extremely familiar with areas #28, 29, and 31. Further south is the Tower Grove area (#27, 26, 25, and 15) all these areas are really nice the closer you are to Tower Grove Park. Grand Avenue immediately south of Tower Grove Park is well known for a great string of restaurants and bars.

Other areas of consideration:

#21, Soulard: A historic neighborhood with a restaurant/bar on nearly every block. Home to Oktoberfest and Mardi Gras celebrations. A fun and lively area to live, but rent may be a bit high.

#32, Lafayette Park: This is a French historic neighborhood with a few neat restaurants, bars, and boutiques and a really safe and nice area to live.

#34, LaSalle Park: A residential area with not much to it, but an okay area to live.

North and west of Forest Park are nice, but the neighborhoods can be spotty. If you are looking in this area, be sure to stay close to Washington University (Wash U) or the Delmar Loop (The Loop).

Overall, almost all Saint Louis neighborhoods have their spotty areas. If you have a specific rental in mind and aren't sure about the area, PM and I will gladly let you know if it's a 'nice' area or not.

I currently live in an area called McKinley Heights (#23) and it's a really nice area and surrounded by really great neighborhoods. I plan on not paying for parking at SLU to save money by biking; using public transportation; or taking SLU's free shuttle service.

Hope this super brief insight to St. Louis' neighborhoods helps!
