skills test question

Ok, I have been studying up on my "clinical skills checklist" that we are given in school, here in FL. I just have to know, when it comes time to do your skills test, do you gather up the supplies needed , BEFORE you explain to the patient what you're doing(meaning: introduce yourself 1st-then get supplies), or introduce yourself, explain the procedure, THEN go get your supplies. My classmate failed. All the tester told her was simply "you got things backwards".....no explanation, no nothing.....So. we are trying to ask around...:confused:

Just from what i read in your post, there has to be more to the story than what was given. I dont believe they would fail someone for those reasons alone.

from what I know you gather your supplies than introduce yourself

I took my Exam here in Fl and I had to introduce myself to the patient (My name & title) and tell them what i was going to do & then ask would it be ok?..after they say "yes" Wash my hands and get my supplies.

I was told to always explain what your going to do 1st an ask them would that be ok because thats proctection of their rights.

Yes, that absolutely does help, me....anyway. There was actually more to the story, than I was told the 1st time. I just found out from her a little more detail. Bottom line is, she was constantly challenging the tester about this and that. My friend is waaay too technical. She thinks too hard and deep about things. So, I guess that's why she failed the skills test. Don't analize things too much, and don't tell the tester she is wrong....at least about every little thing.......Thanks for your reply!!!;)

I am a technical person too. It can be good and bad. I had to do a few skills twice before I got checked off on it the 2nd time because what I thought was logical was sometimes different than what we are taught. She may have to stop thinking of rather WHY something needed to be done and just memorize the steps & do it.

I'm sure she will do better the next time :)

I passed my test the first time. I would go in, introduce myself, explain the procedure then tell the patient "Ok, I'm going to gather my supplies I'll be right back"

I'm in a CNA program right now and our teacher is an administrator of the state test.(NC) When he demonstrated the skills to us, he walked in the room and introduced himself to the patient and told them what he was going to do and that he was going to go get supplies. He got them and then came back and did the task. I hope this helps!

We were told that the only steps of a task that truly have to be done in a specific order are the ones that say "before"...so you'll want to pay attention to those. Also, our teacher said that during the skills test, if you realize you have made a mistake, you can say, "I made a mistake, I did __________ when I should have _________" or "I forgot to ___________" and you will not lose points for that skill, but you have to do it BEFORE you say you're done. Once you say you are done with the skill, that is it.
