SJRCC Palatka future applicant

U.S.A. Florida

Hi everyone, I plan on applying for the SJRCC Palatka program by next May for the Fall 2009. I've been wanting to do this for SOOO long! I am so extremely thrilled I can focus more on my education now. I have a question if anyone can help, I would really appreciate any insight on applying as well.

What hospitals are the clinicals held for SJRCC Palatka and can you pick which hospital you'd like to go to? (I live 40 minutes away already so I don't want to travel much further, just wondering)

Oh and one more, what is the class schedule once in nursing school at SJRCC in Palatka? Will I be able to work at least part-time (20 hours/week) still? I transcribe medical reports from home. Any thoughts?

Thanks to everyone! :nuke:

Oh and to answer you question about the NET test, there is a study guide online http://www.studyguidezone.com/pdfs/netteststudyguide.pdf but i hear the actual book for the NET test is much better. I took it like a year ago and did extremely well on the math portion, it was just basic math. But on the reading portion, you must be able to speed read a bit. Its a timed test so you can't spend too much time reading and thats where I messed up. I was like a point or two away from being able to apply, I wanted to cry.lol.

I know clinical options for the OP program was Flagler, OPMC, Kindred, and Baptist Downtown (not sure if BMC still is). Putnam was also an option for transitions. Since it's close, I'm pretty sure the Palatka program does alot of their clinicals at Putnam like the OP program does most of theirs at OPMC. Can't help you with info on clinicals at Memorial, that would be something new since I graduated. As far as NCLEX pass rate, IMHO that depends on you (regardless of which program you choose). Those of us that were willing to study passed the first time, those of us who weren't willing to study...well, you get the idea. All my best to you!

Ok...in reply to should you apply for FCCJ??? YES!!! Apply everywhere it can only better your chances of getting accepted the first time. And as someone else mentioned there is no wait list...it's all points based on your pre-req grades (9 classes I think) and your NAT score.

This is how I prepped for the test and I thought it was a great idea:up:: I made sure to take it early enough so that if I really stunk it up and got low scores that I had time to retake it before my application was due. You have to wait 3 months in between taking and re-taking the test. Because my whole thought behind it was...what better way to see what the test is like than to take it? If you have to retake it then you have wasted $30...but you now know EXACTLY what the test it!

I was lucky enough to do well the first time because I'm a good standardized test taker...but my friend went with me and needed to be able to take it again so my plan worked for her :yeah:

anyway...a lot of rambling to say I would apply to fccj if i were you...i'm driving from green cove...so you could handle the drive too :chuckle

Good Luck...and you're right it is soooo much to think about

I started SJRCC Palatka program August 06, and will graduate this month! Yippee! :D  In the Palatka program, we generally had a choice between Flagler Hospital St Aug, Putnam Hospital Palatka and Orange Park Medical Center. For some courses we also went to Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. The lecturer used to have a sign-up sheet so that we could mark our preferences.

As far as time commitment, in the the first semester we had three full days at college ecah week, and one course on-line. Second/Third semester it changed to one full day/wk at college and two days/wk clinicals. Final semester was one day/wk at college, plus 56 hours clinicals at Kindred Hospital in Green Cove Springs plus 120 hours clinicals with your one on one preceptor. It is possible to work part time as long as your employer is flexible and you can commit to studying at nights/weekends on all of your coursework.

Good luck! :yeah: Let me know if you need more information.

One little opinion of mine...TAKE NUTRITION ONLINE!! It was so easy online and it really helps when you've got a million other things going on.

It's a lot of info to pack into a summer course...that's why I took it online so I could have the help of a book. I took it through fccj online...if you want me to dig my teacher up I could...all I remember is everything was fine and easy except for a big project at the end. Which wasn't hard...just a little time consuming

but hey...I came out with an A :D

I am currently in the OP program. Clinicals are at Memorial Hospital, OPMC, and Flagler. Everyone does Flagler for PCII. Hospital contracts with the school change, so I'm not sure which hospitals you will be going to for either the palatka or OP program. Good luck! Hard work, but worth it in the end!

The NET for SJRCC was easy. Just go ahead and take it and if you miss any parts, review and retake. It was very easy though, just answer all the questions. If it gets close to time up, don't forget to guess the rest.

Yes, nutrition would be easier on line IF you are somewhat self-motivated.

two of my best friends just graduated from SJRCC. well one is set to finish in august. Clinicals are done at OPMC and Flagler hospital I know of but may also include some others. I know the friend that is graduating in aug is in her last semester and has had clinicals in green cove, orange park and in St. Augustine. St johns also just started using their NEW health building with all of the state-of-the-art equipment. About acceptance, just having your CNA license gets you extra points (you dont have to have worked as one as of current app information). I will tell you FCCJ/SJRCC accept clay/duval/st. john's counties over ALL other applicants first. I believe getting in is about as hard for SJRCC as it is for FCCJ. I couldnt apply to SJ though b/c I had some trouble with Micro and had taken it four times...fourth time was an A (thank goodness). They deny anyone whom has taken micro more than twice which is understandable i guess.

Bummer...I thought if you lived closer to orange park it would be easier...I think that SJRCC orange park campus holds their clinicals at OPMC only...

and I think you can only apply to one campus at a time

I know what you're saying about driving though...I have an hour and a half drive to and from school every day to look forward to to get to FCCJ...but I really wanted the exposure to the most hospitals that I could have. Plus 16 months of driving like a crazy person to go where you really want is worth it! I will just have to record my study notes onto a cd at home lol :lol2:

when you get accepted be sure to call worksource...they are paying for my tuition...all you have to do is keep an attendance sheet...meet with your case manager and keep a 3.0 averge for your nursing courses! *sweet*

I live in Putnam county but I'll be attending nursing school in Daytona. Where do you have to go for this workforce thing?

Any employment office.

Are you still applying to Palatka in May?
