Sinus tachycarida?

Published

Today I took a quiz and the question stated...

"What is the most appropriate nursing action for a client experiencing sinus tachycardia?"

a. give digoxin as ordered

b. administer acetanimophen for fever

c. something I can't remember lol

d. ablation of the sinus node

the correct answer was administer acetanimophen and I don't know why, the question states nothing about the patient having a fever, digoxin lowers heart rate so makes sense to give it for tachycardia right?? maybe my instructor made a mistake haha?

Yeah - I know what it does (and your heart rules your BP/output)...but you just don't administer when someone is tachycardic. It's a long-term script med and it's not used prophylatically.

You also don't administer it for BP/HTN as you indicated in the first post. Digoxin can be a very dangerous drug and there is a reason it is being replaced by newer and safer meds. By decreasing HR and increasing contractility many of times you can actually raise BP.

Fair enough - I'm not sure why I even posted that because I 'knew' the use for Digoxin?? Anyhow...my instructor would have had a cow if she saw that post - so I retract, respectively!

dig is for heart rate..it lowers heart rate.

Not quite. And to the person who said it's for BP...not right again. I suggest looking it up and understanding the mechanism of action. You don't give it to lower someone's HR, you give it to increase the effectiveness of each beat(contractility) as they said. If my HR is 110 because I have a fever and I'm hurting..please don't go give me digoxin. Like they also said, you don't treat SINUS tach. You treat what causes it. Now if you had some SVT or something, then sure give some adenosine(not digoxin)
