I am pregnant and due in Jan 2009. I am deferring nursing school now and will attend August 2009 in a 16 month BSN program. Class schedule is about 8-4 M-F but occasionally I will have to be available some nights and weekends. I am going to school at Duke and I am not from NC. I have no family and one friend in med school so support will be close to little or none.
Are there any single parents in nursing school or . How is it? How do you afford everything while in school? Who keeps your child while you work or attend school?
Please help and comments questions or suggestions are welcomed. I am afraid that I may not be able to attend school as planned. Is it possible? I am sure it will be difficult
Keylani,
Unlike most of the other posters here I am not a nurse and have not even started nursing school. I will be taking my first pre-req this summer. However, I had to comment. I am also a [newly] single mother of a young baby (13 months) and have been wondering how I'll be able to handle everything as well so I totally feel where you are coming from. Btw, I also live in GA :-)
I wanted to give you some words of encouragement that anything is possible. If it's meant to be the Lord will provide a way! A friend of mine started law school in California last fall. She's a single mom from Michigan and is a brilliant woman. During the time she was applying to law schools all over the country, she had no idea how she would possibly survive in a completely new and different city on her own with no support system, no money, and with a then 2.5 yr-old. But she relied on her faith and God saw her through. He provided her with a full-paid 3-yr scholarship to a great law school and somehow got her into a program where her rent and her childcare are both being paid. All she has to worry about financially is feeding herself and her child and putting gas in her car. And she has a nice apartment in a nice part of town, in a nice city. The girl has been blessed!
Keylani, anything is possible. Apply to as many campus-based scholarship programs at Duke as you can and hope for the best. Look into government-sponsored programs in that area as well. If in the end things don't work out and it's not feasible to pursue nursing school in NC right now, just know that it's all part of a divine plan and that God has something else in store for you at the moment. I'll be praying for you!:redbeathe

I worked and attended NS as a single Mom, but my kids were 17 & 19. I cannot fathom how I would have done it with an infant. No way. But as others have said, if you have a solid support system, it shouldn't be out of reach.
