Should new grad RN go into OR?

Published

So, getting straight to the point. I am very interested in ER, ICU, and OR (only days). However, I don't see any availability for day ER or ICU positions. Is it okay for a new grad to join straight into OR? If I decided later on that I would like to hop the train and experience ICU or ER, would my resume be collecting dust?

** FYI: I have tried the graveyard shift as a nurses aide, and I could never ever do it again**

Is it possible? Yes. Can you chang specialties later? Yes, but you'll need to work at it. I have worked with new grads in the OR who have later transferred to inpatient nursing units including ICU. Changes like that, as well as starting in the OR as a new grad or an experienced nurse with no OR experience requires a willingness to learn, a good attitude, and a supportive environment.

However, if you are only interested in the OR because of the fact that the vast majority of positions are day shift, please consider carefully. The OR is not for the faint of heart or those who truly have no interest. And as for day shift, there's one word for that: call.
