I work as a BSN educated RN at a prestigious academic hospital in Baltimore as an oncology nurse. Its the perfect job, the nurse-pt ratio is 1:3 at the most. The nurses i work with are awesome and my nurse manager is great. I dont work too many nights even though my job description says rotational. The reason why im saying all of this is because its the perfect job but its in Baltimore and my husband hates it here. He moved to Boston when he was a teen and all of his friends are there. Basically i am supposed to give up the job i love and move to Boston where i dont think i can even get a job from all of the many posts that i have read. So is it really that hard to get a job in Boston as an experienced RN and i mean 1+ yr folks. Is it worth moving from Baltimore to Boston where the cost of living is expensive? Is the market going to get any better after the Safety Bill for RNs was passed recently? So many questions. I just need some good points for and against moving to bring up to my husband. I love him and hes miserable here but i dont want to go into financial ruin moving to Boston and not getting a job. Please help.

In reading a lot of the posts it looks like those who are having a hard time are the new grads. Most who have expierence have luck finding a job (I think). Maybe come up here for a week and see how you like it. I know a week isn't a long time but it might give you a quick glance. Also start looking at the housing market (if you own) if you rent start looking at prices. Suburbs aren't that bad in price, yes it's expensive but people can do it. Just start doing research and come for a visit, it may be better than you think! :)

Thanks so much! I am going to do some major research into Mass markets before anything else.

HI,

I see you are looking for something to go against moving to Mass....but one thing that would work in your favor is that since your an "RN at a prestigious academic hospital in Baltimore " that might work in your favor for landing a job at Mass. pretigious hospitals as well.

Honey you would get a job no problem but... of course there is a but one if you need to do your research and two don't leave if you dont have a job! Also I don't know if where you is unionized and if it isn't most hosp here in boston are... Not the one I work at. Boston is a great place to live and I would recommend it to anyone. If you are ready to pay 1000 plus for a studio to live in boston do it. I pay over 1400 for a 1br just to live in the heart of boston, dont need a car or anything. Another thing your husband has to realize that this isn't going to happen tomorrow.

Me I am the other way around I want to go where you are for the cost of living is cheaper .PM and I will givde you some recommendations as to where to apply

Thanks so much for all the replies! Is it possible to live outside of Boston and commute to work? Dont know how easy this will be. Any suggestions of good places to live that is not as expensive as boston but easy to commute from? I wish my husband could realize how expensive moving is going to be...

PS. Moving down here is an excellent idea! The weather is great and the cost of living is definately cheaper. I originally moved down here from NYC and am paying just 800 for a hugh 1BR in Baltimore. Hopkins would be a great place to work for..

If we switch places do you want my apartment and place of employment BIDMC and I take your apartment and place at JHH hahaha

yeah if you live north the commute is def better than the commute living south of the city

yes you can live in the suburbs and commute, there are trains to take - not like NYC but we have trains that run in and out of the city. check out the MBTA website

Heck, I've worked with nurses who work in Boston and commute from New Hampshire! Not that I'd recommend living that far away, though.
