Dear Nurse Beth,

I graduate in May with my BSN and am applying for positions in the ER and ICU. I will have multiple managers from different units in my interview. When applying, should I write a cover letter for each specific hiring manager or one that would cover any manager that shows up to my interview?

Dear Graduating Soon,

Congrats on your upcoming graduation! You are wise to apply for jobs now instead of waiting until after you graduate.

The answer is-compose one cover letter. Customize your cover letter to the organization. That's because it's one interview, even though it's a panel interview with multiple managers.

note: While many applications accept cover letters, some do not. You'll know because there will be no way to upload a cover letter. Be sure and follow all the instructions.

Typically copies of your resume and cover letter will be printed out beforehand for each interviewer.

Tip: Bring extra copies of each in case there aren't enough-sometimes staff nurses are pulled into the interview at the last minute, and it's a dissatisfier to be without a copy.

Here's another tip: While you would never put your image anywhere on your application, you can make up simple business cards with your contact information and a picture of yourself.

This is a tip from my book How to Land Your First Nursing Job ... and you're next!

One late afternoon, after a long day of panel interviewing new grad RNs, all of us interviewers sat around and talked about our impressions, ranking the applicants.

We were tired, and even with our notes, it was hard to recall everyone and differentiate the applicants. One bright new grad had passed out business cards with her picture. She really gave herself an advantage! Instantly we could recall her responses, and we were impressed with her strategy.
