Should I wait another year??

Published

Hi again everyone. I just made a post yesterday about my C in anatomy but now I am contemplating on changing my original plan on when to apply to BSN programs.

My original plan was to begin applying this coming fall. This past year I did classes during fall, winter, spring, and summer. If I were to apply this coming fall, I would have Microbio, Nutrition, Anatomy, Gen Chem I&II, Stats, and Developmental Psych all finished. This means that I would still have Physiology and Organic Chem to take during the spring semester after I already applied to programs.

The reason I am now considering waiting another year to apply next fall is because of the C in anatomy. I wouldn't have Physiology done yet and I feel like I wouldn't look super competitive if I only had that anatomy grade and (hopefully) an A in microbio without having completed Physiology yet. It also would also allow me to lighten my course load, build up my volunteer hours, and get a job since I am not currently working.

I fell like the smart choice is to wait another year to apply and to really focus and get As in everything else but advice would really help!

Also, I forgot to add this to my original post, but I'm also thinking of just doing the A&P I and II sequence instead. I know people say to not retake a class if you have a C but would it be beneficial to just switch to the A&P sequence instead of taking just physiology??

does the program you are applying to penalize you for taking classes over?

It wont hurt to apply, will it? Worst case you don't get in and do your plan of waiting another year. I don't see a down side.

I tried to find info on it but couldn't really find any on retaking classes that you already passed. I think I am going to email them about it and see if they get back to me.

If you have the time, then take another year and do A&P. I honestly can't understand why some schools still teach anatomy and physiology as 2 separate classes. And, yes, you will really need to buckle down and work hard to improve those grades if you want to be competitive for nursing school admission.

Hi,

So I got into my ADN program and will be starting my second semester this Fall. I know the ADN requirements are not the same as BSN requirements but since I already went through the application process, I thought I could still help.

I agree that it doesn't hurt to apply however, make sure you are eligible to even apply at this time. I don't know your entire situation and can only go off of my experience but I'm a bit confused and surprised that you are able to do so before completing your pre reqs because the pre reqs determine your GPA and your GPA is needed to see if you qualify for your program. Among other things, your TEAS score is also taken into consideration in your application and you won't do well on your TEAS if you haven't completed the pre reqs. You see what I mean?

The policy on repeating a course that you have already passed (in order to get a better grade) was on the program application requirements, so maybe yours will also be on your application for your school? If you haven't already, I suggest printing out the application to your program and ensuring that you meet all the requirements because if you don't, you can apply and they'll take your application fee, but you won't get accepted.

Volunteering does not get you extra points or help you to get into the ADN or BSN program where I'm at. It's strictly based on GPA for core science classes, another GPA for general classes and the TEAS score. And double check your policy on the TEAS score too. Some schools only accept the original score so you want to be well prepared before taking the TEAS test. Basically, if your original TEAS score doesn't meet their minimum score, you wouldn't ever get accepted and would have to look at a different school so check to see if your school will accept multiple attempts.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you for the reply! Yes, I think I'm just going to wait because it will just help me more in the long run! The reason it allows you to apply is because the application says it's a requirement to have at least 3 pre-reqs done by the time you apply but the rest can be finished in spring! Also, I know that some programs are different with their requirements but my top one doesn't require TEAS scores at all (though I'm still going to take it because some of my other schools do) and it's a minimum requirement to have at least 100 hours of volunteer experience, hence why I'm currently doing two volunteer jobs haha.

Honestly, I think it will only benefit me if I stay though I can still apply just to see! Thanks for the advice!

Ah, gotcha! Yes, yours is quite different! Thanks for understanding and being open minded to the fact that I was speaking from my personal experience and was trying to help. I wish I could help more!

I went the route of completing all graduation requirements and pre reqs before getting into my ADN program and now simply have just the program to worry about which is one class per semester (though it is a 10.5 unit class). I find it more manageable this way. Some of my classmates still need to take additional courses alongside the program which is already intense otherwise, they risk completing the RN program but won't graduate until the required classes needed for graduation are taken.

Well thank you for taking the time to provide your experience and try and help out! I always enjoy hearing about other's experiences and such with theirs application processes. It's cool to hear about other options.

That seems smart actually. I would hate to have other concerns along with nursing school. The program seems stressful enough by itself!

Again, thanks for the help :)
