Should I take the NCLEX in Ohio if I'm moving to Florida

Published

Hello!

I am graduating with my BSN this May, and then I will be moving to Tampa in June.

Some people have told me to take the NCLEX here in Ohio where I currently live, and then transfer the license. But, I look and neither Ohio or Florida are part of the 17 states that are practicing this easy reciprocity thing where you don't have to repeat the application. Apparently other states may ask that you repeat the application process, but do you have to take the exam again?

What would you do? Would you take the NCLEX immediately after graduating in Ohio and then go to Florida, or would you take it in Florida?

If you know that you are moving to FL and plan to work there, not in OH, there is no reason for you to spend the time and money getting licensed in OH and then immediately turn around and apply for FL licensure. Just apply for licensure in FL, and have your school send the necessary documentation to the FL BON instead of the OH BON (the schools all automatically send all the info to their own state BON each year; they can send it somewhere else, they just need to know that you want them to).

Okay thank you! Do you know if this route is also cheaper?

Cheaper than what? It's definitely cheaper (and quicker) than paying for two licenses ...

Sit and test in Florida. As elkpark stated, paying twice does you no good! If you ever go back to Ohio you can apply for license by endorsement and pay the required fees for that at that time. Good luck! :)

Just to clarify, it doesn't matter WHERE you take the test. It's wet here your apply for licensure. I took my exam in NJ, but was originally licensed in NY. You can even take the exam abroad in some cases.

So you mean I can sit in Ohio and take the test for a Florida licensure?

You can physically take the exam in any location that is convenient for you. What matters is to what state you've applied for licensure. You want to apply to the FL BON for licensure, and then, once you have your ATT, you can take the exam anywhere.

oh okay thank you!! so much!
