Should I take 2 math classes at the same time....

Published

I don't know what to do, I am trying to put together a game plan. Okay, I have 2 Algebra classes to take before I can take any of the science classes. I was thinking about taking both math classes this fall, Basic Algebra & Intermediate Algebra. I work full time 40 hours a week and taking 2 classes at at time. I want to apply for Nursing school for January 2010 but at the rate I'm going I wont be ready. I will have 2 remaining classes to complete. I would love to take 3 classes at a time but I am not sure if I can handle it . I am a single mother of a 16 year old so she is pretty much independent and I am not dating so I concentrate on my studies. Here is how I laid out my schedule, any suggestions would be great.

Fall 08: Basic Algebra & Psychology I

Spring 09: Intermediate Algebra & Phychology II

Summer 09: General Biology & A&P I

Fall 09: A&P II & Micro

Spring 2010: Nutrition & Socioloy

I was thinking to take both math classes together this fall. Registration is going on now so I have to make my decision quickly. At this rate I can apply to Fall 2010 Nursing school which is during the day and I would have to quit my job(which I would love to do) or wait for January 2011 which is the evening/weekend program. But If I take 3 classes a semester I should be good for January 2010 but I am concerned I might be overwhelmed and my grades will suffer which could cause me not to get accepted. So far I have gotten an A for both my summer classes. Any advice on how I can arrange my schedule would be greatly appreciated :sniff:

I don't see how you could possibly take those classes together. Would you college even allow you to enroll in both? If you have enough of a gasp of algebra to be able to take the intermediate algebra I don't see why you would even need the beginning algebra class.

Unless you've already got a basic understanding of algebra, it's a big mistake to take 'em together. One builds on the other.

Does your school offer intersession classes?

Honestly,

I don't know if I could take them together. I haven't asked my counselor. I scored really low on the Math portion of the CPT. I just completed Fundamental Algebra, and now I have to take basic and then Intermediate. I guess I assumed they would let me take them both in 1 semester. So I guess this solves my questions. Daaah! Anyway what do you think about taking 3 classes a semester while working a 40 hours work week.

Does your college offer online classes? I think it's definitely possible even if you have to go to campus every day, but it would be a lot easier if you could take your classes online.

I work full time and have a two year old and am taking 3 courses. But I have already started studying the material to give my self a headstart, I also will study during my lunch hour every day, and I sit at a desk so I can listen to lectures in my mp3 player at work(all of my teacher said that was ok) One of my classes is super easy and like Posh Girl said is online.

But it can be done if your disciplined enough. Just make sure you take the time to study. The math should not be taken to together because they build on one another. I think someone else mentioned intersession, which is a good idea or summer session (my cc has 3 summer sessions).

Good luck.

I wouldn't take the chance, because you want to pass both classes with good grades and they both would demand a lot of studing not to mention you may have papers due in your Psyc class which may require research which also takes up your time. I would just take only one math class at a time along with the psyc class. Yes, it may seem like the long way and you will feel like you won't make that expected start date of 2010 of getting into the program but, you have to remember rushing may result in repeating classes if the grades/GPA are not up to par. This will put you back further and result in spending double the money b/c you'd have to pay for the classes over. Take it from me, I've gone down this path and I am now paying to take over classes. We all want to be done and move on to the next phase, especially the 30+ ppl like myself, we think that we should've been finished already. I will encourage you by letting you know that it's not a race to see who can finish the fastest but who can endure. To finish , you will finish and achieve you goal of becoming an RN if you hold on and be encouraged. Also looking into other schools in your area may be another option. Anyway good luck in whatever you decide, we're all here rooting for you.:anpom:

I thank everyone for their words of advice. I am going to stick to the plan I laid out. Today was my final exam for my class and I passed with an A yeah!!! I am so excited. I guess at 42, I feel like time is running out and I have sooo much anxiety about starting as soon as possible. I need to chill out and take it easy. I must say I am enjoying going to school and it feels darn good to pass with an A. If I could only relax and enjoy the journey. My problem is I need immediate gratification and when I decide to do something I go full speed ahead. You are correct, that I will explore all my options at different schools when I am ready. But right now I am enjoying the sweet victory of another class conquored with an ice cold Corona :yeah:
