Should I take chemistry and general psych?

Published

Hey guys,

The nursing program at my local CC doesn't require chemistry as a pre-req, but I'm wondering if maybe I should take it anyway. Would it make some concepts in nursing school easier to understand? Also, the TEAS exam says it will cover some chemistry. I took it in high school, but I never studied it a lot and forgot everything I learned about it.

Also, I'm wondering if I should take general psychology...I only need to take developmental psych, but I'm really interested in psychology and would actually like to take general psych as well. Since it isn't required, however, I guess it would be useless. I'd take it more for "personal enrichment".

Just wondering what you guys think, thanks!

If you are planning on continuing for a BSN you'll need chemistry. If you plan on taking it though, check with the BSN programs around you to make sure the CC chemistry will transfer. Don't worry about the TEAS. If you go through the study guide it'll help you with the chemistry questions (and the others as well). Also, check your course requirements. In order for me to take developmental psych, I had to take general psych first. Good Luck!

I'm planning to take an ADN-BSN bridge program when I get my RN...I thought all that was needed to get into a bridge program to BSN was an RN license? And also at my school, for psychology, general psych is not pre-req to developmental psych. As long as you have the reading comprehension, you can go straight to development. That's why I'm kind of indecisive - I wouldn't NEED to take it, I just want to. :D

Just for your own good, double check the BSN program. I know someone that's an RN and working towards her BSN now. She has had to take all the BSN requirements that she hadn't taken. I personally love psych. I've pretty much taken all the courses that are offered at my CC so I understand the desire to take the class.:-)

I loved General Psych; it's useful in every area of life. Plus, it's refreshing to take a class of personal interest every now and again. Go for it!

I'm in Chemistry right now and I hate it. I love all of my other classes. Psychology and Biology and and English and Math, etc. But I hate chemistry. If I could pick one pre-req not to take it would be that one. But it's up to you. I wouldn't take it unless I had to... I'm in general psych right now and I love it. It's so interesting and I have a great teacher.

I have a BA in psych, so I'm biased.... but I think psychology classes make you a more rounded person and more capable to put yourself in someone else's shoes. Being able to look outside of yourself and understand that others often perceive things differently than you is a huge skill that is an asset no matter what you do. I say take the psych class. As for chemistry, I would definitely take that. Though it may not be required in the program you're interested in now, are you 100% sure that you're going to end up at that school? It's a really important foundational course, so I would absolutely take it.

Thanks for your input! I think I'll go for it and take the extra psych class then. :) As for chemistry, the other school I was looking at requires organic&biological chemistry, so I would need to take general chemistry first...I'll probably end up taking it.
