Should I take a chance?

Hi everyone!

I am a new nurse working on a medsurg unit. I have only been in my current position for 3 months. Medsurg is not my passion but I do recognize it can give me a good foundation in nursing. On a whim, I applied to a maternity RN position and got a call back for a phone interview. The maternity position is part time but they will train me in mother baby, l&d and nicu. Maternity is originally where I wanted to start out in but it was so hard to tap into. My current unit staff has been very supportive and not toxic. They work as a team and have been very helpful in my learning process. I know that sometimes the grass isn't always greener on the other side but I feel conflicted.

Strictly an opinion here:

I think this question would be much more easily answered if you were being treated poorly at your first job, not given proper training, poor work culture or the situation had been significantly misrepresented during your hiring process and was not desirable.

But, given that you have been supported and are not in a toxic environment chances are VERY good that you can do a lot worse than that by changing right now. Just like if you were being treated significantly poorly chances would be decent that you could do better than that.

If you are being treated well and are advancing your knowledge, I personally wouldn't regret having seen it through for a year or so. People love to say how xyz nursing areas are soooo different, as if nothing learned in one is applicable in the other, and my belief is that that's rarely true.

If you are in a safe and healthy place to advance towards competency and expertise as a nurse (any kind of nurse) -- well, those opportunities are not a dime a dozen these days. I say stick with it.

Good luck ~

Thank you so much for your response!

I agree! I am VERY fortunate to be on my current unit. I admit I'm afraid of being 'stuck' on medsurg. That's probably why I'm considering an early crossover. For now, I'm just going to learn about the position a bit more and go from there. Thank you again for taking the time to respond.
