Should I stay or should I go now...

Anyone else thinking about leaving their current job and moving on to another school next year? I work at a great private school but thinking of switching to public for the pension.

I'm thinking I'll start the certification process next year (complicated in IL), and if my school isn't willing to work with me I might sub while I get certified then move on to bigger & better pay checks.

It's not too complicated! It was daunting when I first looked into it because I had to take the TAP (or the ACT or SAT) and have my titers drawn and have some immunizations. The classes themselves are not bad at all. Are you looking at UIC? As far as I remember, there are only 2 available in IL. The biggest issue to me was the cost- it is pricey and you can't get student loans for it since it is a certificate program as opposed to a degree program. Feel free to PM me with any questions! I did the UIC program in 2017/18.

I'm thinking UIC. The only issue is the internship part. It's just lil ol uncertified me here, so I don't know how I'd do those hours or if my school would even cooperate with me. My husband and I are so close to paying off our student loans so saving up for the cert program is next on our list.

I think they will set you up with a preceptor if you do not have one. There were several people in my cohort who didn't have access to one in their district. You don't have to leave your district to do the hours.

Oh wow! I didn't know that was an option. Thank you! Game changer!

I signed up for one of their webinars about the program before I started and got a ton of info and you can ask questions. There is one on April 17th! https://nursing.uic.edu/programs/certificate-programs/school-nurse/info-sessions/

Have you considered that if you are not happy that you are not utilizing your nursing skills to their fullest, then may be then school nursing may not be for you? I dont mean to come off sounding mean or anything, but it is something to think about.

Oh, no, I LOVE school nursing. I am at a small private school and I'm not as busy as I would like which means I'm often bored.
