Should I start new job and school at the same time

Hello, this will be my first post here at allnurses. I've enjoyed reading some of your post and found some interesting things here. It's been really helpful. This fall I will be starting my senior year in an ADN program. I was recently hired as a student nurse tech at a local hospital. My hours will be every Friday, and every other Saturday and Sun 7pm-7am. So one week I will work just Friday and the next I will work Fri - Sun. (just to clarify) it's a 24 hour position. My class lectures are on Monday and Friday from 12-2pm. And I have clinical on Tuesday and Wednesday 7-3pm. Can anyone advise me. Do you guys feel its too much? I wanted a weekend position because I have to work, and I felt like I would be able to study during the week. I think I'm just getting nervous because school is right around the corner. But I'm really freaking out now. Please help..

As long as there is plenty of time for you to sleep, study and let off a little steam then you should be ok. I am also working every Friday night, and every weekend, 9a-9p in the ER at my hospital. I know myself and my study habits to know that I will be fine. I also have time during the week to catch up on school work and relaxing (although not much).

What it really comes down to is how you handle pressure and your level of organization. With a schedule that busy, you'll have to be super organized.

Don't get too nervous, people have dealt with much worse.

Hope this helps

I'm interviewing next week for a Sat/Sun 6:30p-7a shift. I need to be working, and that seems like the best shift. I've also been told that on overnights you will have a little study time but I don't know how true that is. *If* I get it, I will be starting right about the same time as going back to school.

I think it's doable. Maybe you can try it and if you see after a month or so that it isn't working, then ask if you can try different shifts. Also, schedule your time every day so you know you have enough time for studying. I have a grid made up in Excel that I print out to look at my time.

I also worked the overnight 7p-7a during school. I was working every Fri and Sat until this last semester...now I can barely work Sat. There are nights when I have all kinds of time to study and then there are nights when I do not even have to time to pee...I think it has been a wonderful learning experience for me as well. Not only will I be used to working nights and working 12 hour shifts on top of it...but I have observed and performed many skills that I had only either seen in the book or on the dummies in lab.

Thanks you guys, for responding..... I know it will be helpful in the long run as far as experience. I'm definitely going to plan a schedule and stick to it. I'm just a little nervous, you know trying new things. I need to stop stressing myself and try and enjoy these last few weeks while I still can. School and the new job is right around the corner. I'll wish I had spent this time relaxing. Thanks again.

Anything is possible...just put you mind to it and do it! I am feeling the same way because I just applied for a position on the weekends and I am entering my second semester in nursing school. I think it will be a wonderful experience and I am looking forward to it!

I work Friday and Saturday 12 hours overnite shifts.....It takes me 2 days to feel normal. So on Mondays, I feel like a zombie I usually tape my lectures so that helps. The problem I had is that most of my exams fell on a monday. get my drift. You may not perform well if that is the case for you also. When it came down to taking the finals, my nursing advisor said to take the Saturday before it off, as it could mean me passing the course or not. Needless to say I did request it off and did well as I passed. I will be starting my third semester in September. Everyone is different, so you might not experience any of what I did. I wish you all the best!!!
