Should I get my EMT-B cert.?

I am almost finished with my 3rd year in my BSN program. I am interested in getting my EMT-B certification this summer. I am taking two required non-nursing electives, and can take my EMT course through the same college. If I do this, it will make me full time (12 credit hours) for the summer. I am dead set on becoming a flight nurse in the future, and this will help me on the road to becoming one. The only thing that concerns me is that I am not sure if I will have much time to practice NCLEX questions or study, and seeing as I am going into my junior year I feel that doing questions will be important during the summer. I plan on doing as much as I can during the summer anyway, but do you think having two classes plus the EMT course will cause me to fail in the long run due to not having much NCLEX study time?

Personally, I was able to take my EMT course along with a full course load and encountered no problems maintaining good grades. It also in no way negatively influenced my later progress in nursing school. If it is what you want to do, and you think that it will help you achieve your future goals, by all means do it. If you are worried about not being able to practice NCLEX-style questions because of your course load, my suggestion would be to download the NCLEX-RN Mastery app onto your phone. It has thousands of NCLEX style questions, and you can practice them anywhere. It'll come in handy when you are doing your EMT practicums, as you have quite a bit of downtime when you aren't on calls.

Thanks for the reply! I think I will do the course! There will be plenty of time for NCLEX questions some other time

I'm not sure what the other options are but you could always look into starting off as an EMR, the course would be far less rigorous and it would get you inn the right direction :) I don't plan to be a flight nurse, I actually whant to eventually be a psych NP, but I still plan to eventually get EMT certified, which I plan to do as a progression starting with emergency first responder certification. Good luck .

I would say go ahead. The EMT class is not anything too intense. Although just having the cert with no field time will mean absolutely nothing, most likely, when it comes to helping you with becoming a flight nurse.
