Should I forget about nursing?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hullo all! I'm sorry I didn't go introduce myself first in the forum, but I've been thinking about my dilemma for quite a bit, & I'd really like input.

I'm a 2nd year Biology major with a horrible GPA. I was placed on academic probation last semester (1.96), but given a chance to up my GPA during the summer. Which I did. It's a little over a 2.0 now.

The thing is, I'm doing a BSN transfer to MCG. :| Which is...bad news for me. I guess.

I'd have to basically make straight A's from here on out to even be considered. I did the math, & I'd end up with a 3.3;

however--if I only achieved B's, I'd end up with something around a 2.6, a few points below the required 2.8.

It's not that I don't have confidence in myself, but a few courses, I'd seriously doubt I could make an A in. I'd really have to bust my butt, which is fair...

Anyway. I'm not ready to give up on Nursing, because it is something I want to do.

However, the BSN transfer program is looking a little dismal.

I really don't know whether I should just...major in Biology & do an accelerated BSN program,

or...try to raise my GPA to the point where I can transfer to a nursing school...or what.

Again, I'm a sophomore, so I feel like I'm too late or something.

I had no sort of guidance involving college since I'm the first of my family, but now I feel like I didn't take it as seriously as I should have & really screwed up.

I know I was wrong in neglecting my studies (versus working); I just need to have some kind of advice to work with.

I tried meeting with my adviser, but the best advice she gave me involved transferring to a tech school & doing nursing there. :/ Which I don't want to do.

Not to mention she talked a mile a minute & I hardly got anything in.

I'd rather have a BSN, in a proper time frame, if that makes sense.

So my biggest question is--if I happen not to have a decent GPA in time to attempt to get into MCG,

should I finish out my major in Biology & just do that,

or maybe try for a nursing school?

Ohhh confusion. Sorry so long.

As for speaking with counselors, you may want to speak with someone at the school where you will be. They are the ones who can give you an accurate view of your situation and advise you correctly

I would also say to retake the lower grade classes if they are prereqs. I did poorly in my third quarter of A&P, and I'm going to do that.

The important thing is to focus on successfully completing the program. If it takes you a little longer, so be it. It doesn't really matter that much in the big scheme of things.

You've received many comments regarding what you should do. I just want to reiterate don't give up on what you want to do in life. Right down that goal (including writing your name with RN at the end) and put it up on your mirror. That should be your motivation to excel in your class.

@nobhill--I was actually really worried about the time frame for my completion. I had the mindset that I -had- to finish in a certain amount of time, but that is definitely not the case. It'll take a little longer, but it will be worth it. :] I'm talking to a nursing program advisor this week, actually. My own advisor didn't offer too much help when I asked her about my situation; I guess because she only deals with BSN transfer programs to MCG instead of just nursing.

@mzchas--Much thanks for your inspiration. :] I will do just that. I know that I truly want to be a nurse now, & I'm willing to work extremely hard for it!

Dont give up if this is something you really want :)

Hey Acidic, digging through this forum led me to your thread. Not sure if you'll even get this but I also want to just root for you. I'm in a similar situation where I flopped my freshman year for a 2.48, (now a sophomore and focused!). I panicked thinking that I was never getting into the health care field but you and I both seem to have WOKEN UP, finally. It's never too late, though. I'm hoping to make it to either Emory, MCG, or GSU. I decided to not take anything BUT one of those three schools. My mom isn't necessarily too thrilled of her son going into nursing after all the negativity she's heard about the field. However, I want to (respectfully) prove her wrong and beyond. I digress. Anyway, who knows, perhaps we'll cross paths at MCG. I've heard crazier things (specially in health care). Good luck to you and STAY HUNGRY. One thing I did notice is that no one ever told you be happy. Any form of rejection, fails, and shortcomings are TEMPORARY. Be happy that you still have chances and be happy while going through school and career(s).. which goes to all of us. Don't wait to retire to enjoy life like every disgruntled person who work for money. Work for the people. When you get up there, pay it forward. I'll see you at the top.

Please don't give up...I was exactly in ur situation, I was a bio major and my soph. or junior I failed a class bcos it was too late to withdraw and it was a grad class. It was removed from my major GPA but still was on my transcript. I was thinking about nursing but I felt it will be "too late" because I'll be behind while all my friends graduated on time...wrong decision...however what I did was finsihed up my Bio degree stuyding really hard and had a 2.7 GPA cummulative, then I went to a community college at my home and took all the nursing pre-reqs Anatomy 1 and 2, micro, nutrtion, orgo chem (just for the challegne), dev. psychology, health ethics etc and ended up with a 3.7 GPA while working full time with my bio degree. I tried to apply to Accelereated BSN programs but I just kept ending up on the waiting list, so I applied to the school where I got my 1st degree and they accepted me as a transfer student. It will take me 2.5 yrs to complete unlike the accelerated BSN programs that are 1 yr plus or less but I still made it to nursing school in the end...at least I will have time to work as a student nurse extern during holidays and weekends in order to gain experience before I graduate as a nurse because, a lot of employers want someone with experience, I wouldnt have had time to do this if I got into an accelerated program. You can do it!!!
