Should I even bother going to West Coast University or is it a joke?

Published

I'm currently finishing up my pre-reqs at National University, and I know people with straight A's that have been denied into multiple nursing programs. I know a lot of people that are thinking about going to West Coast, and I've heard both sides of it. Some think time is money, and it's better than waiting a couple years to possibly get excepted into a program and then pay the money back later while getting ahead. I've also heard that because anyone can get in, and there is no waiting list, that it will be looked down upon, almost as a joke, and that hospitals won't take it seriously, will overlook your resume, and it will be very difficult to get a job. They say that even if you do, you would start at a terrible place to work. I don't know what to do, I'm still on the fence.

Btw, I'm in Southern California. What does everyone think?

Also, I got a C+ in my first Anatomy, and probably a B in the second one, then I got Microbio on deck. The last two I'm retaking due to moving and not being completely focused the first time around. Do I have a chance at getting into a school, or am I screwed? lol

Anyone? Anyone else considering going here? Better yet, has anyone graduated from here and got a good job?

Bump for responses.

Hi BK21,

I personally know a few graduates from West Coast who are successful RNs in well known hospitals but the price tag may not be worth it. Have you considered applying to the cal states or other less expensive alternatives? It doesn't hurt to apply and you can always apply to West Coast as a back up. Good luck!

Are you considering West Coast because you don't think your grades are good enough? I think they're probably fine to submit an application to a BSN or an ADN program. Look, it's going to be tough to get into any program in nursing. There are just way too many candidates but that shouldn't mean that you rule yourself out because of a C and a few Bs. People with straight A's aren't guaranteed a spot but people with lower grades have gone on to become RN's. Don't give up just yet! Retake the classes you got C's in and shoot for A's. Try to get some kind volunteer work. Then apply for any school that you are eligible to apply to.

West Coast is too expensive in my book for an RN degree. That's just how I see it.

I'm am retaking them, but didn't do too much better. B's...not horrible, I guess. I just don't want to wait for a couple extra years hoping to get into a program, only to get denied, then realize I could've gone through West Coast in that time period.

How important are the teas test, or any of the other testing that gets you into programs? I mean, I know they're very important, but could really good scores on those get me in over someone that has straight A's but not so good scores on them?

I appreciate your responses, thank you.

My GPA is a little rocky too but I am working on raising it through my prereqs. And I am going to work really hard at getting a good TEAS V score. I know SEVERAL people who went to WCU (I almost went myself but once I heard my friends experiences I DIDN'T sign up) and they ALL hated it and said it wasn't worth the super pricey price tag to attend there.

Look at Cal State University LA, their minimum GPA requirement is a little lower than 3.0, they have a pretty high NCLEX pass rate, also their prereq requirements are not a mile long. CSULA is one of the schools I am planning on applying to. I'm also planning on applying to Western Governers University, which I have heard varying things about good and bad but definitely heard alot more good things than bad.

Good luck to you!

look into ADN or BSN or ADN w waiting list if they still exist, WCU is pricey thats almost the payment of a mortgage once you graduate and thats $$ they taking you might still need more to get by for 2 years i would look into different schools and apply far i mean 100k+ im pretty sure you might consider moving to a different city just for school. i have a friend she got in w a 3.0 81 on teas onto a cal state on her first try with no connections or help from others its possible good luck!

Which Cal State?
