Should BSNs be paid more?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I know ADNs and BSNs both sit for the same NCLEX exam, both have approximately four years of education, and at best have negligible differences (over time) in their nursing skills. BSNs take courses than broaden their overall knowledge; however, ADNs have more clinical experience prior to entering the workforce. Should there be a differential for BSNs, or should the reward for obtaining a BSN lie in the ability to advance one's career?

I'm not trying to start an ADN vs BSN bashing, I'm just curious to see what you all think.

Marie_LPN,

I found what you were talking about and I am absolutely disgusted. Now I understand more the lack of respect at nurses for all levels...LPN, ADN, BSN...they are not advocating nursing...they are dividing us and making LPN's look like incompetant nurses.

Here is a link, http://www.nysna.org/images/pdfs/practice/epdarnchart.pdf

They actually state in this link a Technician, which is seen to be an LPN...but God forbid if they use that terminology...that an LPN would not report a situation to an RN.

Unbelievable, well they just took us back 10 years...I will say this...I am not going to stop visiting their site...I am going to boycot them...I will be looking at ways to remove their abusive, unfounded stance, and down right out lieing to the general public.

To be exact, with my knowledge of law...this could be a class action suit against them...because they are classifing LPN's as technitions, we are licensed nurses, techs are not licensed they don't sit for an exam such as NCLEX. This is abusive to LPN's career's, plain and simple.

I know LPN's that have on numerous patients stand up and tell the doctor things that would have prevented a diagnosis, which later could lead to poor treatment...where was the RN, oh they were there but they didn't see it.

Unbelievable, this will be pasted into a letter to them and I will be contacting people on this matter. Because what they are saying are lie's and they are misleading the public...there is no truth in calling LPN's, techs....

I guess I am really sad and offended to see this poor turn of events for nursing, instead of uniting us and giving the public an honest view, they have divided us more...

The worst thing about this is, did anyone of them in that organization go to LPN school or teach LPN's? From the history I am getting on it, absolutely not a single one of them did. This is disgusting...one of the worse things I can see happen to nursing, just like what CNA(cali nurse assoc.) is doing.

I ask all LPN's and the RN's who know and have worked with great LPN's to stand up and advocate against this...I will be a RN soon, I know my value now as a LPN and I always will. I will ALWAYS fight against organizations that do not state the truth in nursing and our roles.

There is a difference between RN and LPN however we are still nurses and capable of great nursing assessment and implementation of the nursing process. We do not deserve to be classified as tech's who have no license.

Again I ask all to stand up and fight against this...RN's and LPN's alike.

Don't let an organization seperate us....

Annette

Just to begin this for the injustice served to LPN's, I have posted the above on additional websites...I also joined their forum and posted this...here is a link....

I will under no circumstance tolerate the injustice of being classified as a technician or have my fellow NURSES classified as a technician!!!

Again I ask RN's and LPN's to stand up and JOIN together, we are all nurses...on different levels yes, but we all deserve our respect...I ask you all to fight for it.

Thank you

Annette

It isn't until we are truelly unified shall we find a defense against disrespect...that means all nurses....

Okay... I DID NOT KNOW THERE WERE NEGATIVE REFERENCES TO LPNS...OR I WOULD HAVE NEVER POSTED THE LINK. Sorry, these references never came to my attention. My apologies to Annette and Marie. I had no idea they were like that.

Yikes.

Again, I'm sorry. And the view expressed on their site do not reflect my own.

Oh Ali gator,

I am not upset or offended by you...you are not the one who did this...to be honest with you, I had to spend over an hour on their website till I found it...they have it hiden well...but now that I have it posted on 5 boards including their own, perhaps we can see some changes...such as a LPN as vice president or next to the president, I think then they will see it.

IT is not your fault don't be sorry...I still love ya!!! We debate good I like that!!!

Annette

edited to add, that I included these postings to every email I could find on that website...I don't let things go easily as I am sure you all have seen...LOL

Thanks Annette. I would have never made the connection had you not pointed it out. That is really disappointing. Again, I had no idea they were like that.

By the way, why not write to them. You're very convincing.

I already started hun, everything you see posted on here, I sent to them...every email...actually joined their forum...LOL And posted on there.

I think they may kick me off, some people cannot always handle such strong decisive fews as the wonderful nurses on this site.

We shall see, I am not trying to put LPN's on the same level as RN's. All I am saying is we too are NURSES...we too deserve the recognition and respect for our clinical skills and dedication to our patients. Our roles are very difficult at times due to the broad base of our scope of practice. But we can effectively assess and implement many health care patients. Many places are going to no RN for management only LPN, now I am not saying I agree with that cause I don't, just like I don't agree with ADN management...but hey that is my .02.

We are nurses right along side of you RN's...we just want you to see us for our value...we don't ask to be considered at the level of a RN, we know our place it is as a NURSE for our patients.

I have just wasted the last 20 minutes checking out that nursing advocacy site. I would not take anything from that site too seriously. They have a definite chip on the shoulder attitude. There is a piece on nurse friendly language that is laughable. Check it out! http://www.nursingadvocacy.org/faq/faq.html#nf

They take themselves way too seriously and state it like their philosophy is the end all. Not very credible or helpful to nursing in many ways, IMO, but more of a joke and rather an embarrassment.

Although this thread is more about reimbursement than advancing the nursing profession, some may find these interesting reading.

I think a BSN differential IS in order.

(and I am an AD nurse)

Why should the bsn obtain higher salary if doing the same job?

I think people should be rewarded for more education (and experience, and credentials, etc.).

Teacher do the same job and they get more for having more education. Generally more education = more $, why should nurses lose out on that?

More power to anyone who can do more to improve their knowledge/experience & make more!

I explained all of that ad nauseum in this thread...... in a nutshell, higher education should net rewards. Nursing will not keep up or advance in the 21st century unless and until we learn to put a premium on education. Simple as that.
