hello! im a student residing in oc
first of all, i have some q's about long beach city college. do you have to have competitive gpa to even dream of entering lbcc's nursing program? i read that they choose students based on their gpa's..is this true? do they keep a waitlist and how do their waitlist work? obviously i havent been to their info meeting yet, i have to go later this month, and whether i go or not hugely depends on the answers i get on this thread.
my overall gpa is 3.2 and have a, b, c, a in anatomy, physiology, micro, and english, respectively. honestly speaking, do i have a chance at schools that do not use the lottery system and take grades into consideration? are schools w/ lottery system my only options?
thanks for reading :heartbeat

Tina55, I am starting the RN program at LBCC in a couple weeks As far as the way they work entry - it is totally based on your science gpa - no other grades really count. There is no waiting list and entry into the program is very competitive. You may want to consider re-taking the science course that you got the lower grade in (and hopefully do better) then apply to the program.
At the information session, the director will tell you that you should be 'ready to graduate' and have all of your undergrad classes done before you apply. They don't base your entry into the program on if you have this stuff done, but it is better to just focus on the nursing classes and not have to worry about taking other stuff.
That being said, the nursing program at LBCC is not considered full time (as far as financial aid) and if you NEED to be full time (for your parents insurance or your own financial aid) you will need to take another 2 units of credit or so.
There are people that got into the program with me that had a science gpa of 3.0, but some that had the same gpa and did not get in... So, you can take your chances and apply with your current grades but in MHO, you should seriously consider retaking at least your lowest science grade class (micro?) over.
Good luck! It took me only 2 tries to get in, but others that I know have tried for the 3rd time or so...
One more thing - if you are considering the LVN/LPN program at LBCC, there are other requirements (not needed for the RN program) that you will need to take. Pharmacology, Transition to Vocational Nursing to name a few - so, that may be an option if you are not 'set' on starting with the RN program. :icon_hug:

Your GPA depends on the school.
Depends on a few factors, how many applicants ..How many seats available. How many applicants have a better GPA than you to fill those seats.
My best advice is apply, and dont just stop the application process at one school. Aim for at least 3 schools that you could get to within a reasonable time. While youre waiting to hear back, or waiting to apply again take co requisites and try and ACE those suckers so when you apply the next time around you have a better chance than you did the last time.
Savvy?

Because of waitlists and lotteries, the academically strong students are highly encouraged to apply to programs that admit students on a competitive basis. I'm also in CA. Based upon your grades, it's my opinion that you don't have a strong chance. My school also penalizes for retaking classes. If you retake a class for a higher grade, total focus is needed to insure maximum benefit.
On the other hand, your grades are what they are. Apply and see what happens. It certainly won't hurt. I think that your grades would have been perfectly fine 5 to ten years ago. The recent economy and impaction have encouraged many competitive students to enter nursing.
thanks you for all the thoughtful responses :redpinkhe
the schools i have in mind right now are golden west in huntington beach and harbor in la (im going to commute and cough up the gas money or move to la with my family) and they both do lottery. ive pretty much made up my mind about lbcc; im not going to apply there. i should apply to one or two other schools but it was not part of my plan until i read the responses here and hopefully there's still time for me to meet the deadlines. what im worried about is that i dont drive on the freeways (except for short distances) and have a horrible sense of direction; i cant imagine driving all the way to la or anywhere far on my own! *headache*
Grumpygs congrats on your acceptance! you must be thrilled! i should look into the lvn option. if i do get into a lvn program and finish, would that boost my chance of receiving an acceptance letter from an adn program?
Tina55, getting your lvn first would benefit you at any other program but LBCC.
They only accept a few (sometimes none) of the LVNs into the ladder program there - but many other schools (GW I believe has just started a large ladder class) would probably welcome you with open arms.
It was something that I considered until I got into the RN program. GW has a great program too - so try them all and don't give up, just keep applying. (I would still consider retaking micro though just to be on the safe side).
Good luck, I'm sure you will get in somewhere! :icon_hug:

I am a 2nd semester student at LBCC now. I chose to go there because of their lack of a wait list. I applied in the spring of 2007, was accepted, and began Jan 2008. I also had a pretty good GPA, they accept applicants completely based on the science GPA. It helps if you have finished most if not all of your general ed prerequisites as well though. Good luck, you have a good shot!
i cant retake micro bc it hasnt been 5 yrs since ive taken it and hopefully ill be in a nursing program before im able to retake the class again
Kitty_Kat can i ask what your science gpa was? is mine 3.0 since i received an a, b, and c? im two classes away from finishing up my general ed; ill be done with it by the end of this fall
I got an A in Anatomy, an A in Physiology, and a B in Micro...so my GPA was about a 3.5 in the sciences.
