Short Term Disability/2 Weeks notice

Hello all,

I need some guidance. I am currently out of my job on short term disability. My physician supports that I do not return to this job. I do have a new, more manageable job for my health condition lined up to begin in a few weeks. Technically I have to give my 2 weeks notice asap - but I am concerned that if I do, I may be terminated on the day I submit my resignation (rather than the date I state in my letter). I cannot have this happen because of financial obligations, I need to be considered an employee up until the date in my resignation letter (the 2 weeks). However, if I quit on the date I plan not to return (ie without 2 weeks notice), then I will be put on the "do no rehire" list, which will be bad for future job reasons. I have truly been a wonderful employee for this hospital up until the past 4 weeks when a series of very unfortunate and terrible things have happened. I work in a union hospital if that makes any difference. I am very worried and concerned at this time, so any advice (and soon) will be greatly appreciated.

It's not unusual for employer-provided short term disability (as opposed to insurer or pubic provided) to require that you pay back funds received from short term disability if you don't return to work, so I would check into that if I were you.
