Shifts too long

Nurses Stress 101

Published

I started working at the hospital after being out of acute care for 7 years. I haven't done 12 hr shifts on a long time. I'm having trouble doing my 3. It's really 12.5 hrs plus an hour of driving to and from work. The. They have me attending all these new employee classes which they add on before or after work. I'm sorry! I don't think I should have to attend a 2 hr class on top of working 12 hrs. I think if they want you to attend class they should schedule you for 8 hrs plus the class! My manager told me my request was not reasonable. What do u guys think?

Honestly that's a situation most nurses go through. I do my 3 12's on top of 2 days of 8 hour critical care classes. I drive 30 minutes to work in the AM and 45 on the way home because of traffic. Yes in reality shifts are 12.5 to 13 hours a day but that's to be expected. A 2 hour class is nothing all you have to do is sit and listen and on the clock!! I cherish my 8 HOUR class days, I take advantage of being off my feet for a day! All I can say is stick in there, it gets better and easier. I can't speak for all nurses, but I understand your frustration. Believe me when I say att the end of the day, it's all worth it.

This is pretty much standard practice at all facilities (unfortunately). Been there, done that.....repeatedly!!!:sour: Not much you can do but get addicted to caffeine like the rest of us. I'm so sorry! I know it isn't really fair, but it is pretty much the same way everywhere.

I think you like to complain about your job.

Maybe you need a different one.

My job offers online courses that are accessible from home! The courses are mandatory and we can do them at home in our underwear...and get paid! The most I've had to stay over was approximately 1 hour for a meeting...but again, we are able to attend those meetings via conference call over the telephone. Maybe ask your manager if this would be an option in the future. I know I would HATE to stay after work to attend a class...

I think you have nothing constructive to say and I'm trying to express how I feel so I think you should be kinder on your posts!
