Shift DRAMA

Published

OK, so back in the summer I started at a new hospital with the understaning that I would be doing 36 HOURS (3 12's) on the off-shift.

So I start working and b/c my preceptor works 40 hours (2 12's and 2 8's) I must work it as well. I bite my tongue and just do it. I find out I didn't like the unit, I transfer to another with the understanding that I would do 36 HOURS (3 12's) on the off shift. Again you must work what your preceptor does so I bite my tongue and again do 4d/wk or 40 hours. That was a total of almost four months on orientation (it's a specialty unit).

I get on my own. I am supposed to be scheduled for 3 12's. My manager comes to me and says that is not condusive to learning and she would be more comfortable with me on 1 12 and 3 8's (36 hours). I bite my tongue and do it. I later speak with my manager regarding my schedule and say I need to go to my schedule of 3 12's for future schedules. She says OK even though apparently the lady I was to bounce off of only does 2 12's and future orients are not yet out of orientation.

So she tells me a couple of days ago I would be on 3 12's. The schedule came out today and I'm NOT! I am still 1 12 and 3 8's even though I told her it is NOT a convenient schedule for me at all.

Folks, nursing is stressful enough. But I've got other issues in my life too that are stressful especially with holidays coming up. Since I've been at this job it's like it has taken over my life. I am totally stressed out and tired.

It's been nearly five months of this. Now am I wrong for wanting what I was promised?!?

Listen, you tell her just what you typed up there. You've got to do it NOW! If she finds out you're about to get a job somewhere else, she will probably make an exception and change it. If she doesn't change it, then it really sounds like you need to find a job that you can work the hours you need.

If she is not will work with you on this, then what about in the future when something else might come up and she won't work with you??? Good luck sweetie.

We are union here is Washington state for most nurses and other health care workers but I have only been in this state for about 4 years. Most of my 30 years of experience has been in Texas which is a non union right to work state. Diane

I'm with others...put your foot down. Tell them, don't ask, that you be put back on the schedule that you need to work. Tell them you schedule your job around your life, not the other way around. You would like to accommodate them but you can't, as your life situation doesn't permit it. If things don't change, give them your notice and seek employment elsewhere. It's not worth it, and if they can't at least partially accomodate you - then they're not worth working for to begin with.:twocents:

I learned the hard way- you have to stand up for yourself from Day One, or you will regret it.

Respectfully insist on what you were promised.

So I eventually spoke to her. The next schedule she has me half and half (the two weeks around Christmas I work three 12's) and the first and last week of the schedule I am 4 days/week...so she did try to partially work with me) and I've got a nice spaced out schedule there so I'm glad I did speak up about it. She told me that the girl who is to bounce off of me gets off of orientation next month so we're working together now to do our schedule (3 12's!!!) for the next one. So it looks like it's gonna work out.

All I know is January 21st I will have six months and the ability to transfer to another unit if I continue to have scheduling issues (where I will get it written into my contract) but it looks like for the new years things are looking okay at least.

Babs0512, are you still at that job you mentioned?

Thanks for all your support guys! I appreciated each and every one of these posts!

RN 1981: No, I'm working for the same facility, but in a different department. Where I am working is pretty much the only game within an hour radius of where I live, so unless you're young, and don't mind traveling in harsh weather, there is really no where else to work. Our hospital takes full advantage of that, believe you me. Thanks for asking

Blessings
