Just wanted to start a thread for next cohort. Where have you guys applied? I applied to MICU at grossmont and float pool in chula
Thaomakesyougowow said:LOL yea I applied like the beginning of this year but I didn't do my preceptorship yet so understandable that I didn't get an interview. if you guys don't mind me asking, what are you guys experience levels? Like have you taken the NCLEX, where was your preceptorship, top 3 units you would like to work in overall?
I see! I took and passed my NCLEX in May (I don't like studying so I just took it to get it over with). My preceptorship was in Chicago at Northwestern on a pulmonary PCU. I did my externships before my junior year were in CVICU, ED, and the OR. During my senior year, I chose to pursue research over being a tech in my final year and investigated evidence-based practices surrounding enteral/parenteral nutrition which was fun! I presented at the national conference for undergrad research in Wisconsin in April - there were some really amazing nurses that gave good tips on grad school and first jobs ? I've spent most of my life with my little brother at Rady's - he just had his third airway reconstruction there about two weeks ago! I decided to become a nurse because of RCH, and, ideally, I'd love to work with kids, but I also loved working in the CVICU, so any ICU would be awesome too!!
How about you - what has been your journey so far, and where would you like to end up?

Im about to take my NCLEX next Friday! any tips or suggestions to look at for the NGN NCLEX? I also did my schooling out of state as well in Ohio. I did a preceptorship in MICU/SICU and was a student nurse extern in the float pool. Oh yea, I saw that there really isn't much options of peds besides RCH which kinda stinks for ppl that wanted to do peds. So hopefully you get the job there! I 100% love critical care as well. I would love to do any ICU but ED also seems great to work in. I enjoy high intense atmospheres as it keeps me on my toes. I think its so crazy how extremely competitive it is out here in SD but where I did my schooling, nearly every hospital was begging for new grads. California really is saturated ?? but this is my home town and I wouldnt wanna settle anywhere else

This area IS really, really saturated - we were pretty close, I did my undergrad in Michigan, and my externships were in Kentucky! It sounds like you have really good experience - I'm crossing my fingers you get interviews and offers this cycle!!
With the NCLEX, I personally thought the test was quite easy. I only had an art class and my preceptorship my last semester so I looked at each topic/body system week by week. I took like a week and a half off after the semester ended. After I graduated (May 7), I only used Archer and did the bare minimum. I did 4 readiness assessments and got very high chances of passing and did only one CAT exam, which was a pass in 85. I think in the end my average was a 70, I only used 25% of the test question bank. Just know it's impossible to memorize everything - be confident in what you do know and trust your instincts (try not to change answers). You'll do great - you'll have to let us know how it went after you're done! Sending good vibes your way for it!!

Wow, you have been pretty all around the mid west! thank you thank you ?
I have like horrible anxiety so I have been studying for a month but now I feel like im hitting a wall with studying. I have used nearly all of my tb questions ? but I have gotten very high chances on passing on all of my assessments. yea I have a problem with that a lot too and switching my answers. I appreciate the good vibes!
would you consider moving out of state again to get acute peds experience and then move back to apply to RCH?

Haha yeah my family likes to move - I'm originally from WA. You're definitely going to pass - from everything I've seen, those who consistently get very high/high chances of passing end up actually doing well! As far as moving out of state, I'm really not sure. Most of my family is in SD, and my bf also moved with me down here from KY. I have employee referrals from Scripps, Sharp, UCSD, and Rady's - I think I will probably continue applying until I really can't anymore! Are you in the same boat of being determined to keep applying until it's not possible? I truly hope we all find a place this cohort!!

Yeah, I've been watching Kaiser too. I asked when they would release their next one and they said July but it's still hard to know because I've seen people say they only leave it up for a day for external applications ?

:OOO are you serious?! I didn't know that it was only for a day what the heck...thats pretty poopy.

I guess something opened on May 7, and people in an older chat mentioned it. Again, I graduated that day, and I had been waiting for it so when I realized I'd missed it I was pretty bummed. I guess they list the job as 'inexperienced nurse' or something similar in case you want to check the site periodically! Again, when I asked they said to check in July or August (I feel like probably sooner than later).

Oh snap, I didn't even know that. Yea I emailed them as well and they said July for the October cohort so definitely gonna be on the look out once July rolls around
Hey guys, I might be out of town in the beginning of August but I am worried because it seems like that would be around the time that they do the interviewing process. How flexible do you think they would be with me if I got called back for an interview? Or do you guys think I should I just try and find a way to stay in town during that period of August?
