SHARP New Grad Nurse Residency Programs, Summer 2014

Anyone else out there getting ready to apply?

I think there was a question about ICU openings for new grads. I'm sorry if I led anyone astray. What happens is there are several unit or rotation programs. There aren't specific ICU residencies. After you complete your residency, you may apply for a unit you want to work on, or you can stay in the float pool. (Again, this is at my hospital but I believe it's how it works at other places.) If you are hired into a program on one unit to begin with, most people end up staying there. Some apply for other units after they finish their program.

ETA: I was told by a manager and a recruiter that Sharp normally only considers the first choice. The second choice is for when a program is unexpectedly canceled or spots have to be cut.

I'm loving this thread and allnurses. Thanks Coriander for the info! So it says that the NICU one starts on May 11 and its night shift. I wonder how many spaces are available? Also, does anybody know what kind of timeline I should expect since this is only exactly 2 months away? Thanks in advance!

So Coriander, I applied for the only Memorial Track, (Med/Surg,PCU residency I believe) Does that mean I still have a chance for ICU?

When I met with the recruiter last year she recommended to apply for the unit you did you residency at to increase the chances of getting hired. Anyways I wouldn't worry about that right now. You first need to get into a residency program.

I don't know if Memorial hires into the ICU directly out of the residency. Once you're in a program, start talking to people and introduce yourself. Ask if you can shadow in the ICU. At memorial there are two rotations within the residency, last I heard, and it was easier to be hired by one of the two floors you worked on.

Nothing is impossible, so get to know the folks you work with and those in different units. :)

I understand. Just curious because I'm from ohio and precepting in the SICU here.

Whoever hears something back, PLEASE post right away! I'm dying and its only been a few days. LOL. I wonder how many NICU positions there are?!! It starts May 11 so I'm so anxious!

Hey guys! So glad I found this thread...so nervous. Does anyone know if they accept people from out of town? I go to school in Texas. Haven't heard from them either aside from the email. Best of luck to everyone:)

Yes, Sharp hires folks from out of town. :)

Awesome! Thank you Coriander:)

I saw this thread for the Sharp New Grad Program and just want to leave a comment so I get updates. :)

Did it take about a month last time for interview calls and rejections? I'm getting anxious!
