Hi there! I am a Shadyside school of nursing hopefull for the March 2009 start. I was wondering if anyone could give me any information about the program schedule? I have found the course schedule on-line at the Shadyside site, but I was thinking more of potential breaks or holidays during the year? Do you get any time off during the summer? If you have all your pre-reqs done, I understand you may have a day or 2 of during the week for the 1st few semesters, and then after that it is everyday?
Thanks for the info.!

Hello - I too am a Shadyside hopeful. I will be attending the open house this Saturday at the school so hopefully some of my questions are answered. If I get any info I will pass it along. Did you schedule to take the PSB? I'm super nervous about this test...
Thanks so much for the reply.....I will be at the open house on Saturday too. Which one are you going to, the morning or the afternoon session? I am going to the 10am session. I took the test already, (Sept 10th.) I was very nervous as well and I studied my butt off. I DO think that it is important to study. The science portion was very difficult but I did do good on it. There are some totally out of the park questions that I don't think even a fresh out of nursing school grad would know, and then there are some less difficult, but hard none the less questions. Study the organ systems. Go over nutrition and specifically vitamins. The reading comprehension is involved but just take your time and re-read if you don't know the answer to the question. The math is pretty basic stuff from h.s. just go over what is in the study manual. Did you register for the test yet? When are you hoping to start school?
I'll be at the 10am session! I hope to physically met you. I'm pretty nervous about everything! I'm hoping if all goes right I can start in March 09 the sooner the better because I'm scared the longer I wait I might change my mind. I'm scheduled to take the test Oct 17th. Congrats on doing well and as long as you did well you have a great shot at getting into the school. So hopefully we can be classmates because 2 brains are better than 1. =)
I bought the Arco book and it is sooo confusing and I heard this book is harder than the test but I need a total refresher so I figured I got 17 days to study a little bit everyday so I won't be soo crammed. Thanks for the insight on the test.

The day program keeps you kind of busy. The semesters are 16 weeks long and there are 3 semesters in a year = 48 weeks/year. That leaves 4 weeks for breaks. Not exactly sure how the breaks work for those starting in March. I'm guessing a week between each semester and one at Xmas???
I didn't have any prerequisites, but during the 100 level classes had about 1.5 days free each week. During the 200 level classes I think I had less than a day free each week. Hardly any time free during the 300 level classes. The 400 level classes are the last 8 weeks of the program. During that rotation you go to school one day a week and squeeze your required clinical into the other 6.
Since you have the schedule you can see the number of hours for the various non-nursing courses. If you can place out of them great-more free time for you.
I hope if all goes right I would want to do the day program. But again I'll take whatever I can get as long as I get in the program. But first things first gotta pass this PSB!
Well, good news - I just got accepted for the March start! I am thrilled so here I go! DaBurgh, did you take the test yet? Thanks for the info. danh....I assume you are there now?
CONGRATULATIONS! That's soo exciting!
I took the PSB last friday and I must say at one point I was like I think I'm doing very well then in the same sense I feel I bombed it. I did look over my vitamins but a few questions got me...sooooo I should get my results back next week I'm freakin a little bit. The waiting game must go one......
YAY! You found out pretty quick that you got accepted...that's awesome.
Yes, I did find out quickly. Natalie, (did you meet her,) has been SO SUPER helpful! I must have called her a million times and when I finally found out that they got my last reference letter I asked her point blank when they would be reviewing my file? She told me they were reviewing the files they had so far on Friday. (That was 2 days from then!) She said to give it about 2 weeks. Well, they must have reviewed my file and got right to the letter....I got my acceptance on Wednesday! I think it helps that I got my testing done early, (which you are not too far behind,) so what I would recommend is to have your application ready to go and when you get your results back send it in RIGHT away! Natalie did give me a good pointer though - when I asked her at the open house what they look at the most she said to write my essay based on the philosophy. I was surprised about that, but she said so many people write it on whatever they want, (clearly not what they were asked to do,) and it was obvious that they did not even read the philosophy. Interesting. Also something else to keep in mind - my grandfather always said the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Keep calling, keep emailing - show interest in your status. Natalie is so nice I don't think she really minds, plus, she might just push you to the head of the pile b/c she is sick of hearing from you!
As far as the PSB goes, don't sweat it now. You studied, you did your best, right? Truthfully, I thought I failed the science portion, I really did. Obviously I didn't, but even still, I think the results are percentiles, not percentages. If you studied and did better than most then you should be OK.
Let me know as soon as you find out your test scores. I think if you pass you have a pretty darn good chance of getting in.
I forget, are you going for the March full-time start too?
I'm pretty nervous about the test I did study but I still feel like I failed. I keep checkin the mail all anxious even though they said 7-10 days. =) I'm happy I took it when I did because in case I don't pass a section I can retake it and it still gives me enough time to apply. I did meet Natalie and I think she is great. I was a pain when I couldn't get to the shadyside site online and she put up with my many emails and calls =) So I might have to introduce myself again.
Thanks for the advice on applying. I have all the paperwork filled out I just have to get my references not to slack and get them to send it in ASAP.
I'm excited for you. I hope that we can be classmates. I'm looking to start in March. I'm excited for this possibility of a career change. I just want the weight off my shoulders of wondering if I have a chance to be a Shadyside student.
I just love this site. It has been sooo helpful...plus a great way to meet new people in the nursing profession.
Congratulations on your acceptance. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Hello! I'm going over my application and working on my essay. When you say the philosophy should I go over all the parts of the philosophy? I'm looking at the philosophy on the internet and I want to make sure I'm reviewing the right thing.
Thanks for all your help!
