I am taking classes for my BSN and am a class about nurse leadership. I'm currently shadowing an NP to observe leadership attributes. I'd like to come up with some questions to ask, but I'm currently braindead (possibly from reading the Leadership book for 4 hours straight). Anyone have any ideas of anything I can ask (coming up with questions isn't required or part of an assignment, fyi, so, no, you aren't doing my homework :) )

Yes, ask her what you want to know and why it works...I bet there are a million things you want to know and why some actions are effective and why some are not. Peace!

I just did my leadership observation last week, and I had a few questions brewing, but mainly wanted to go with the flow. I asked about her history, how she became interested in becoming a leader, any advice for a new grad, etc. But for the most part, I just let her do her thing and I followed up afterwards. I did keep a small pad of information going - I kept a few notes on the meeting itself, and I also reflected and wrote down how she handled situations or influenced meetings.

Ask her what qualities does she look for in a leader. What qualities does she look for in her employees to encourage leadership. What are her strenghts and weeknesses as a leader. Treat it like a job interview........

ask about how change occurs - who has to be included and what are the protocols for changing everything from staffing ratios to buying new equipment to doing inservices and competencies.
