SFSU Generic Masters

Published

I was just curious if anyone applied to the Generic Masters program at SFSU. I haven't really heard too much about it, but I submitted an app for the heck of it. Anyone know how good the program is?

I also applied to it. I'm local, so I went to an informational session a few months ago. They paint a pretty bleak picture for chances of admission due to the State budget - they get many hundreds of apps for about 40 spots. I'm sort of kicking myself for spending the money on the app knowing those odds. People I know in the program have mixed reports: some loved the program, others really didn't care for it. A lot of the complaints I've heard have had to do with the uncertainty of the budget situation. The school has a lot of mandatory, campus-wide furlough days, so even though it's an affordable program, some people I know feel like they weren't getting their money's worth.

Which specialty did you apply for in the program?

I applied to it too. I wonder if I'll get in or be one of the majority rejects :) ? I love the SFSU campus and SF. I'm still trying to decide between a career in dentistry or nursing. I think the program should be good if its like the rest of SFSU. I'm an SFSU student, and the furlough days are hard on everyone, but if you put in more work studying, you will learn despite that. The mandated furloughs are very disruptive to the semester, even if they do feel like a day off.

I applied to the acute adult care program. My goal in the end is to become a FNP. I heard that they will cancel classes needed by students who are already halfway through the program. Do you know if there's an interview process?

They do not have interviews - it's based entirely off your application.

I did get an email from the nursing school administrative assistant saying my application had been received and was complete, and the message said VERY EMPHATICALLY to refrain from contacting their office until they send out acceptance/rejection notices in April. They will be the last school I applied to to send out notification.

I talked to someone at the office today. They started sending out letters today and they will keep doing that, in batches, until the end of the month. The waiting game is KILLING ME!!!:uhoh21:

In BATCHES? So feasibly we may not know until end of next week? No one I know has heard didley squat yet. But the whole "sending them in batches" makes me think it may not be until closer May until most of us hear word.

This is the first and only nursing program I have applied to. Now I understand why. Anyway thanks for the info.

I checked the mail again today and found nothing. Anyone else heard any news??

So they go out today through Friday. I'm dying here, and scared to know, too. It's a crazy and exciting, dread feeling all at the same time.

Is this program usually 3 years?

Is this program usually 3 years?

The program used to be only 2 years, but with the budget cuts, they eliminated the summer courses. So, yes, now it's 3 years. At least that gives the economy more time to turn around, and hopefully brighter job prospects upon graduation. I'll be starting in the GMSN program this spring and am anxious for it to start!

Good luck everyone! :)

Hi LN and everyone!

I just got accepted to the GMSN at SFSU for fall 2012 CNS Women's Health! Woohoo I would really love to be in touch with someone who is in the program right now or has graduated from it.

My main question is, After completing the undergrad, pre license portion of the program, and while we are doing the masters portion of the program, can we work as RNs?

Anyone?
