SFSU ELM-A Spring 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

San Francisco State University ELM-A Spring 2018

Hi everyone! I've been obsessively stalking all of the other SF State ELM-A topics but I haven't seen one for Spring 2018 yet. I hope we can share information as we try to survive this process together!

Some information I got from the online info session:

ADMISSION STATS: Every year 65-115 applications are received, 24 are ultimately admitted

COST: The ELM-A program costs a total of $65-66,000 (not subsidized by state funding, only federal loans available). The non-accelerated 3 year Entry level MSN in Fall semester is a total cost of $24,000.

LENGTH: 2 years, (6 semesters) no Summer breaks. Last 2 semesters are graduate-level courses.

DEADLINE: Cal State Apply: Aug. 31, NursingCAS: Sept. 17

LOR: 3, one must address health-related experience

EMPHASES: emphases do not affect your admission (no quotas for any of the specialties)

Adult gerontology, pediatrics, women's health, community/public health. Also Nursing Administration and Public Health Nursing.

INTERVIEW: Group format interview sometime in October (not 100% on this). I've heard that it is VERY brief.

GRE: Analytical Writing score of 4+ (only writing score is considered)

A little myself: Semi recent grad - English major from small liberal arts college, 1.5 years of experience volunteering at a women's health clinic as a health educator, also a volunteer hospital birth doula for 1 year. I have never worked professionally in a health field other than through volunteer work, which may disadvantage me. I speak Spanish fluently and live in the Bay Area. Undergrad GPA: 3.81, Prerequisite GPA: 3.85. Still waiting to hear about GRE Analytical Writing. I am hoping to apply for a women's health specialty or Public Health. I should really decide by now!

Please post about yourself and any questions or answers you might have! Hope to hear from you all ?

Hi all, I'm new to this thread but I've been following the comments! I got an acceptance e-mail and got off the waitlist but I'm pretty surprised. How was orientation? Did most people who received admissions offers accept them? Thanks!!

Hi! Congrats to you on your acceptance! I am currently on the waitlist and wondering which number you were on the waitlist?

yeah today!! I'm pretty surprised.

Congrats! Thats amazing; what number on the waitlist were you?

I'm not sure, I had asked for feedback on my application but didn't hear anything yet.

Congrats for those accepted! Unfortunately, I don't know much about the wait-list.

As for orientation, it was more insight on the program, expectations, books,classes/schecdules/clincials

and their requirements etc.

The dead has an introductory welcome then we had someone speak about the clinical requirements.

We'll be starting clinical after the first 5 weeks of the semester, so week 10 is when we start our first portion and we will be either going to a comnunity placement for health assessements or a LTC/SNF. Dependeing upon placement/and avalibility, some people may be at the SNF/LTC for 5 weeks while others are at a community placement and then after those 5 weeks, we'll switch.

We have to pay for our drug/background check through a portal called Castlebranch before our Feb clinical deadline. I believe it's $127.00. We need to have the TB test done as well as the most recent fluc vaccine as well as be current on all of our titer immunizations as well as pass a physical from a physcisan.

Then they had Kaplan nursing come and speak to us. We have to use a Kaplan Nursing program for the first BSN portion of the program. It's $560 total and is broken down into installments for each semester. This was a big portion of the orientation because every semester we're proctored and have to take a "mock" exam, but in the paperwork, if you fail it, it's a big deal... Its used in every course and depends upon the professor, but it seemed to have a lot of helpful study assistances, NCLEX style questions, homework, practice exams/quizzes, interactive vidoes/books etc. At the end of the BSN portion, our Kaplan program comes with the "well-known" Kaplan 4 day NCLEX review class for free, because our school utilizes their program, so that will be helpful.

We had a small break and then spoke about clinical placements etc. Our placements will try and be organized depending upon our classes that we are taking, our current address and any additional langauges that we may speak. Towards the grad portion, we have 250 clinical hours per semester of the only master's courses and we have a bit of freedom in where we want to go depending upon our track.

Our class schecdule is consistent for all of us other than clinical sights and as follows

Monday: 9-12pm Nursing 311 human devpt and health assessment

Monday: 1-:355pm; 314:Nursing theory and health promotion

Tuesday: 8am-12pm: Lab for 311

Wednesday: 9-12: 706; mahjor healthcare policy and nursing leadership

Wednesday: 1-3:55pm 720 epidemiology and bio stats

Thursday: 315 clinical placement: 7:10 am-3:55pm (depending)

Then the bookstore came in and spoke. We can buy bundles for this semester: Hardcover bundle for all of our semester books is $457.00 and the e-book edition that we can keep is 314.00 I believe. It's a lot better for price than I thought... We can order online or pick it up before classes

Then we had the NSA; nursing student association speak about the programa and the classes and benefits of joinng the NSA; Its an initial 100.00 fee for the 2 years. They said about 75% of the nursing school has students join from each class/cohort. It has some major advantages like networking, study prep, volunteer opportuinties, i think they went to South Africa, Peru, El Salvador and a few other countires duringt he break periods for nursing/healthcare trips.

Then there was a Q&A period and then we spoke more intesively about the ELMA program since the BSn students were with us as well. There are 24 studewnts on the roster, but Idk how many showed up, given we were mixed witht the bsn students.

We'll graduate in Dec 2019 with the full bsn/msn. Around July/August of 2019 we will take the NCLEX since we will have finished the bSN portion and we can apply for a public health certificate.

Semester 5 and 6, summer and fall classes, we take only master level and have our graduate nursing practicum in our chose field. They said about 2x a week, we're working with a nurse for about 8 hours in addition to our classes

Semester 6, we have to complete our cluminating experience/master's thesis project and have it reviewed by 2 readers, around 30+pages for the master's thesis/project experience.

If you chose the specality route, you can apply to take the CNL exam after graduation.

After, we left to get our photo taken for our iD badge. It costs 20.00

Other things we need:

Books: 314-457.00

Nursing kit(essential study things for the 2 year program) unsure of cost. I think $140.00

stethescope; litmann cardiology se iii or cardiology IV (around 90-200)

blood pressure cuff: $30+?

white uniforms(all white. likely white sneakers too)

sfsu badge patch; $8.00

ID badge: $20.00

NSA: one time fee $100.00

Background info: $127.00

I believe that's it for the costs... They said it's the most expensive the first semester given the initial things we need, after it's not as expensive. Starting the summer for level 2, we will have 2 clinical per week given the nature of the program. We will also have to do pre-labs for our clinicals where we review info for each patient the night before. Also, each semster we have to take a cummulatiive med dosage exam that's 20 questions. We have 3x to take it. As for labs, we will practice on eachother, sims models as well as actors that are trained to act as patients. We will also be assigned our classes, which is good and an advisor too.

Hi, I just sent you a private message. Not sure how well that works so if you didn't get it let me know.

Hi yawp, thanks that's awesome! I can't message back on these boards because I haven't posted enough or some weird technicality. Any other ideas on how to get in touch? Maybe send me your e-mail?

For those not accepted:

Did you receive feedback? I requested back in December and they just sent this: "We received your application and there are only 24 spots. Thank you for applying."

I am very confused. Can anyone else help?

hi is there a fb page? I was just admitted off the waitlist for this semester:)
