SF State or Dominican University of California for nursing?

Published

I got accepted for the pre-nursing major at sf state and the nursing major at dominican. I was just wondering which program overall would better prepare me for the NCLEX?

Well I did some research. I can graduate in about 5 years at sf state since the nursing major is impacted. I don't thing the fifth year will be covered by the scholarship but I'll still have priority registration. At Dominican I'll most likely graduate in 4 years, or the fifth year is free. Do you think I should stay in school longer for less money or stay in school for less time but pay more? By the way, thanks for all of your responses so far.

There is no guarantee you will get into SFSU. There is a separate application after you complete or nearly complete prerequisites. The minimum college GPA may be 2.8 and all prereqs must be completed with a C or higher but there maybe be way more people who meet that criteria than there are spots. You will also be competeing with transfer students as well. I know of people who've applied to 10 different nursing schools once they've done their prereqs. that is how tough it is to get in. Some schools have several hundred applicants for under 40-80 spots.

That is why direct entry programs like Dominican are a sure thing long as you maintain the required GPA.

However as stated in an earlier post if you take the chemistry placement test at Dominican and need to take remedial chemistry and it throws you off the 4 year plan I was told that 5th year is not free.

It is a tough decision make sure you have all the facts before you make it and good luck.

just some stats-1200 apps for nursing school at sfsu, 80 spots. 3 spots were from actual sf state students. (the other 77 were transfers from nearby CCs that have some kind of "deal" with sf state)

if you were accepted to dominican's nursing school, i say take it! it's a gorgeous campus, although it is a lot of money, it's completely worth it in my opinion. (i go to sfsu)

There is no such thing. It just because they had better stats than the people applying from SF State. there isn't a tag agreement on impacted majors...

I honestly don't know what DUC means by that "fifth year is free" because I've had friends that had to repeat some courses in the nursing program and ended up having to stay an extra semester but still had to pay tuition. So I'm letting you know that you're probably going to pay if you stay more than 4 years. In addition, like i said earlier, you might have to consider how the economy may be when you graduate. If it's still bad, I'd want to stay in school. LOL some people want to be done in the least amount of time possible. So it depends on how you feel about staying in school an extra year ( ex. some of my friends are bent on graduating exactly 4 years after high school). good luck.

I think when schools guarantee you get out in 4 years or the 5th year is free, it means if you can't get the classes you need you get the 5th year free. Which I bet doesn't happened often. But there are a lot of other reasons to make a student need more than 4 years, changing major, failing a classes, not passing a placement test I am sure any years after 4 years would be on the student's dollar.

Can anyone give me info on the nursing program at sf state? Is it a good one? How are the instructors? I've been looking everywhere but all I can find is what is on their website, which is pretty general.

Slowrunner, I think I've decided on dominican. But could you tell me how the chemistry placement test was? How would you suggest I prepare for it? Or should I just take a chemistry class over the summer?

Congrats on your decision. Honestly, I didn't prepare for the chemistry placement test. I didn't think it would be difficult, but it was ok. Chemistry has always been a difficult subject for me and I didn't do too well on the placement test. I ended up being placed in a Pre-chemistry class. However, it is recommended to avoid this class because it can cause you to graduate later than the 4 year plan. Since I wasn't taking any other classes that was outside the 4 year nursing plan (for example, if you didn't do well on the math test they give you before you start classes, you would be placed in a math class), I was able to finish my nursing degree in the 4 years. Make sure to take a look at the classes you need to take in order to graduate in 4 years. If there are classes that you are taking that are outside this plan (such as that pre-chem class or math class or english class) you may end up staying an extra semester or have to take summer classes to catch up. Please PM if I sounded confusing or if you have other questions.
