sending an online thank you after interview

Published

I just had an interview today for a nurse extern position that I am thrilled about. I have been in communication with the HR representative from the beginning. She just sent me a quick online thank you for attending (I think it went out to everyone), and that more info would be forthcoming in a week.

I want to show my interest. Would it be appropriate to send a online thank you card? I think she would definitely get it right away versus something in the mail (which is of course the formal way). Would it hurt/help me? This lady is pretty young, and sends lots of emails.

I just went to a seminar for job seekers/interview skills, etc. They discussed this. The thank you note is expected, and most of the panel members said they still prefer pen and paper/handwritten notes, it makes a better impression. They said that email was better than nothing, but all agreed that if you are an interested candidate, failure to say so in a thank you note signals you are not interested and you likely won't be considered. This seminar was aimed at people looking for professional positions, but it probably still applies.

I recommend a quick e-mail thank you -- to be sure she gets it before any decision is made. Then follow up with a more formal snail mail card to remind her of you when it arrives in 2 or 3 days.

Ooooo...nice idea with the double thank-you! :yeah:

Along that line, the job coach I mentioned earlier told us that it is amazing how many candidates fail to close the interview or a follow-up thank you note by ASKING for the job. She said most people seem to assume they are asking for a position by interviewing for it. That is not the way HR people see it. If you want the job you have to come out and say so. Anything else means you will be forgotten before the door even closes behind you.

UPDATE:

I sent an online thank you note (not a card), like the HR rep, and I got the job!

MorningLight - what all did you say in the email? I had an interview yesterday and it's my dream job, but I don't know what to write. I have it all in my head and just can't get it out (if that makes any sense):D

I say no e-mail card (I can see I am the rare bird on this one). First, my organizations firewalls might block it or send it to my junk mail. And I RARELY open my junk mail box. I might appreciate an email that thanks me for my time but I do get a lot of email so that might seem like "white noise" on a busy day. So I say, send a nice handwritten note on decent stationary (no kitties or puppies please) thanking the organization for their time and interest in you. That probably seems like the option that stands out the most.

Well, since she set up the interview by email I did send her a quick thank you. She mentioned yesterday that she had an overwhelming response to the position(only 4 spots available) and still had people to interview and would hope to make a decision some time at the end of the month since the internship does not start till the first week of July.

I will most definitely follow up with a thank you card in the mail.
