hello everyone,

got a question. when applying for the 2012 nurse corp selection boards, are all the applicants all over the country competing with eachother or do you compete with just your region? i was told there were only 22 slots and if we are competing with the whole country-OMG! waiting on an answer sucks. my recruiter has a back up plan for me if i dont get picked the first time for the med/surg but hopefully I do, and good luck to everyone else as well. talk to you all soon.

hey medrock,

you bring up a good point too. i wonder to if they dont tell people exactly what they are looking for so people dont lie and tell them what they want to hear, you know what i mean?

hey kdazzle!

I randomly chose some places too because you're right, another benefit to joining is seeing other places. I put Hawaii, California, Georgia, Virginia. I can't remember the other 3 US places, lol. I also selected some overseas places too; like Japan, Germany, Guam. I'm nervous about my selections though, lol. I'm not too crazy about Georgia either but I live here and I figured if I was based here then I would have some family support for at least a few years. My CNO interview was at Robins AFB and it didn't really look the greatest. The CNO was great and I wouldn't mind working for her, but not sure I would like the area around the base, lol. PM means private message. Not a dumb question at all, that's how you find out information ;). My recruiter also said Friday, well she said that is the estimated release date, but it could be anytime--a week sooner or later. Yeah, don't take it personally if not chosen. It's very hard to figure out what they are looking for in an applicant at this exact time. But I will let you know as soon as I hear something. Talk to ya soon.

ATLRN0828,

thanks for letting me know what PM means.LOL. i would love to go to hawaii or somewhere like that but my recruiter told me not to worry about putting out of country spots cause the likelyhood of getting them are slim to none cause usually they dont put you oversees for your first tour. i never thought in a million years that i would want to join the military. i have always been a homebody and kind of stayed in what my husband calls my little "safe bubble" and didnt want to change anything, but now something just kind of came over me and i wasnt scared anymore to move away from family and try something out of my comfort zone, you know what i mean? it will definitely be a huge lifesyle change, as it would for anyone. i think the thing for me is just getting settled in and making new friends will make me more at ease cause this kind of change can be scary but if we get in we will be fine. i cant say that i dislike georgia, i just dont know anything about that state. i have to agree with you on liking the fact of having a base in your home town. i dont have one in cincinnati but dayton is the closest but one thing for me though is i just want to try somewhere else and if i get home sick, then at least i know i have the option of transferring to my home state. as an officer, we will have the choice of transferring every two years if we want, at least thats what i was told.

Yay Kdaz, you can now PM, lol ;)! That is true that they do not usually send you overseas your first tour but I took my chances anyway. Plus my recruiter and the CNO told me that I could get sent overseas because of the years experience I already have (I'm not a brand new nurse). I have mixed feelings about it, but I guess we will see what happens. I never thought I would try to join either, though I was a military brat. So in that sense I am use to moving every few years. That is really good that you have overcome that fear and are open to trying something different. I worry too about making new friends (I'm a pretty shy/quiet person), but it will be ok. Georgia is ok. I live closer to Atlanta (the city), than where Warner Robins is located. To me there is more to do in Atlanta than in Robins. It seems like a country town. The CNO said it wouldn't have been on her list of choices just because there is not much to do and she knows I have a small child. I'm orginally from Philly, so I don't know how I would like really small town living, lol. Oh and I'm not sure Robins has a big hospital setting (but don't quote me on that). From what i was told you get a "wish list" but you are never guaranteed to go where ever you want and move how often you want. Once you sign the dotted line, it's mainly what the Air Force wants.

hey ATLRN0828,

OK, now i just have to figure out how to PM you. LOL. thats true that the military will have the final say so. i just tried to pick the big hospitals because that is where my recruiter said i would do the most "bedside care". the clinics are more paper pushing than anything which is what i am not used to at all. i also tried to pick places that were pretty warm all year round. my husband hates the cold, as do i as well. LOL. i have a feeling that if we get in and move up in rank, then we will get pulled farther away from the bedside and more into "manager" type jobs. hopefully not though but i would take it as it comes though. I might do well with other roles but dont know cause i havent had the opportunity. i do really well on my floor but get nervous cause i have never been a charge nurse cause they have the same ones that have been there for years so i have never had that kind of experience with that kind of role but if i get in im sure the military teaches that role pretty well (hopefully). LOL. this is why i hope i get in cause i think it would benefit me professionally and help me gain that experience and help my confidence in knowing that i can do that kind of role, you know what i mean?

I really like bedside nursing too. You're too, about those higher in rak. I think the Air Force will fully prepare you for taking leadership postions. I have been charge nurse a few times. It really wasn't that bad. The military will help give you experience.

So how much experience is the board looking for? Anyone know? Lol. I am just curious.

hey medrock,

I am not sure how much experience someone needs. I'm not sure if even the recruiters know and if they do, i dont know if they would or are allowed to tell us. I do know that for experienced nurses, it is at least 6 months to a year. beyond that, i'm not sure how longs experience matters or not. I wish I could be a fly on the wall at one of the board meetings and listen to what they talk about when they go through applications. LOL.

@ kdazzle You are hilarious.....but you know, I sometime feel the same way too....to be able to hear what board members look for in a package, Lol. But I guess we are just daydreaming. All the same, I appreciate your feedback and I should also take this opportunity to thank you and ATLRN0828 for keeping this forum alive with also very informative knowledge your share. I am so glad I joined this forum, and I hope and pray that your get the news you want to hear. Thanks again. L8R

ATLRN0828,

I think my biggest fear is them picking me, and me not living up to their standards and expectations and looking like a complete dumb ***. LOL. I'm sure i am just worrying over nothing. I tend to be a worry wart sometimes. LOL. sometimes it is hard to concentrate on school since i am worrying about this selection so much. we get so invested with all that we have had to put into this ( time, energy, emotions etc) that it makes it so overwelming sometimes. one thing that kind of keeps me upset is that my mom is pretty much the only one that doesnt want me to do this and the only reason for that is because she doesnt want me to take the grandkids away since she has seen them every day of their lives since they were born. so if i do get in, i will be happy but know she will be sad and if i dont then i will be sad but know that she will be happy and i struggle with that alot. as the days draw nearer, i am trying not to stress to much and just pray and know that things will work out the way they are meant to. i know that things dont always go according to my plans but have learned along the way that their are blessings in disguise one way or another (good and bad) and everything will be fine. the same will work out for you too. talk to you soon:)

Medrock,

I don't think there is a specific amount of time that they are looking for. I think they look at the package as a whole. The minimum is at least 6 months. And NTP is for new grads or less than 1 year experience (I think). From what I've read on here there is no real rhyme or reason to how they choose. I guess it's just tthe luck of the draw, lol. No problem (for the info). I just joined this site last year and I like to scroll thru the other post and read what other have already said previously. That's how I get my info.
