The Canadian nursing regulatory bodies all have some type of competency assessment for IENS and some examples of Canadian nursing scenarios can be found through their competency assessment resources, look for the following:

BC's nursing community assessment service's ncasbc.ca-how to prepare resources- general-simulation-hand washing- nursing charts

CARNA-professional resources case studies, 10 videos on What nursing is like in Canada topics include Discharge Teaching, Culturally Sensitive Issues, Inter-professional Team, Communicating, Patient Refusal of Care, Total Assessment, Code, Advocating for Patient Rights, Reporting Errors.

Saskpolytech IEN SEC assessment clinical judgement self assessment six scenarios.

Thank you very much!

@kryza, do you have any idea what the Nova Scotia SECA entails? The NS SECA has not been discussed in AN forum, as much as the other provincial competency assessments have been discussed, and I am not familiar with what is in the assessment. If you can tell me a little more information about what you understand the SECA entails, I may be able to make a few more suggestions for studying. For example, during the SECA, will you be doing health assessments? nursing skills such as taking vitals? charting?

As far as I know they will assess your nursing skills but I don't have any idea what particularly, it's a broad topic!

Yes, it's a broad topic but you already have the base knowledge, skills and ability, you just need to refresh yourself so that you are confident when you do the SECA. There is an interactive resource for students that might help you review some of the basics on assessment and narrative charting, look on freenursetutor.com - topics to study.

Krizya Do you know what type of exams are on the SECA is there a computer based exam? simulations with a mannequin? oral questions/answers?

If you do not know what type of SECA exam you will be having such as simulation in a lab, ask the Nova Scotia Community College or who ever you will be doing the assessment with to provide you with this information. In the mean time, you can look on rnpdc.nshealth.ca at the list of the 34 competencies that are tested during the IEN RN competence assessment. The LPN education is the base knowledge of the RN education and they share the base competencies.
