My sister was talking to an ICU nurse at Swedish who said that new grad jobs are very easy to find there--the hospitals have to hire new grads because they can't find enough experienced RNs. Is that true? Are new graduates still getting jobs right out of school in Seattle?

I can't speak to Seattle, but the Franciscan system, which has hospitals in Federal Way, Tacoma, Lakewood, and next month in Gig Harbor has a very active residency program and hires a lot of new grads.

I graduated a year ago for Seattle University and got a job before I graduated and so did a lot of my friends at Seattle area hospitals. My advice to you is look for new grad/ RN residency programs. My first job out of nursing school was not a very structured residency program and I subsequently ended up leaving that job within a few months. I was miserable and felt very unsupported by my unit and nurses thinking I should know a lot more than I did. I then signed on with the Franciscian organization and it was smooth sailing.

Not right now. THere are alot of projected cuts for the 2009 budget, most of which center in health and education. Swedish and Harborview/UW are in an active hiring freeze right now, and Harborview and UW just rescinded the offers for new grads that were hired to start in Feb. They have also cancelled the Harborview ICU consortium that was supposed to start in Feb as well. All of the job openings posted online state "We have no new grad positions at this time". They are on a hiring freeze, accepting applications ,but will not be going through the applications or offering jobs until the hiring freeze is over
I work at Harborview, and they have a hiring freeze. I'm pretty sure Swedish does too, as does VM. I know that all the travellers at Harborview and Virginia Mason were cancelled, given 30 days to pack and get out (they were cancelled immeidately but given 30 days to find new work through their agency). Swedish is not renewing traveler contracts nor hiring new travelers for the forseeable future. Neither is Harborview or UW or Virginia Mason.
You may have more luck somewhere like Valley Medical, Stevens, or Highline. From my understanding, they are still using travelers, although I don't know if they are taking new grads/ unexperienced RN's

Hi Penny. How were you (and your fellow cohorts) able to find a job so quickly? I am trying to brace myself for whats to come, I technically will not be applying for RN jobs until next fall, but am trying to learn the dos and dont's of finding RN jobs as a new grad. Thanks! And congrats!
Ok so here is the low down on what's now going on! I've talked to a few of my friends who still work in Seattle area hospitals and its true Children's, Swedish, and Harborview are not hiring right now. A lot of area hospitals are doing major buget cuts right, and thus are cutting a lot of their educational opportunities for new grads. I will say this, I now work for the Franciscian Hospital system down in South Puget Sound and we have not stopped hiring yet, we just opened a new hospital in Gig Harbor. Hopefully the economy will be on the up swing by the time you graduate!!!

I got your message, I found a job through the internet, but I also called and spoke to one of the nurse recruiters there. She pointed me in the right direction. http://www.fhshealth.org/ Looking under Franciscan Nursing on the right, then there is a residency site and on the bottom of the page I think it gives you a nurse recruiter site. Hope that helps!

Hello. I graduated from ADN program last year and currently in the BSN program at UWT, graduating in June, 2012. I am very actively looking for a job, but it doesnt look too promising. Any tips or advises on looking or applying for a job? We did not have a senior practimum through ADN program which makes it harder to find a job. Anyone know nurse recruiters at Franciscan health system?
thanks
