I am an acute dialysis nurse. I want to become a nurse practitioner and stay in nephrology. Does anyone know about a program anywhere in the US that does this speciality? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I work as an NP in Nephrology.
To my knowledge there is not a 'speciality' available as an NP in Nephro. To become an NP in an area of specialization one needs to sit for a formal board exam. I don't think there is one for nephrology as it would really limit your realm of practice and what if you wanted to venture into another area. You might be limited by your certification.
Nephrology usually also emcompasses HTN so it would likely be that you might spend a semester with a Neprho group or similar while you are in training, but you would sit for the acute care boards.
Not sure if this is true but I've yet to see any board cert. Nephro NP's.
Good luck.

This thread is discussing advanced practice nursing in nephrology practices. It usually means doing CKD (chronic kidney disease) education in an office, seeing office pts and most importantly, rounding on chronic hemodialysis pts in an outpt setting. CMS governs our world of reimbursement since ESRD (end stage renal disease) is one of the diagnoses that auto-qualifies you for Medicare coverage regardless of age.
