Scott & White

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi! My husband and I just got hired in the critical care nurse internship program starting in Jan. 2010. We are super excited!!

I was curious if anyone else on here was hired at Scott and White for a nurse internship??

Or..does anyone work there currently that has any tips, advice, information, etc...:coollook:

There's really not much to do here in Temple. It is much, much smaller than Austin! I make the 1-hour trip to Austin once in awhile just to eat and shop. :)

TexanSN - Congrats! Which department are you working in?

Specializes in Telemetry/IMC.

Thanks! I'm working on STC-2

Quick question for those that got in.... Do you submit the online application and wait for them to contact you before completing the packet? How did that work? I am just now applying for the Pediatric Internship. Thanks!

I completed the packet and turned it in first, then I applied for the positions that I wanted on the website.

TexasSN -- One of my choices is the STC 2 unit...just waiting for that one to pop up online. I did what you did -- turned in the packet and then applied online. My other choices are ER and ICU, which I've already applied online for -- it actually says Routed:yeah:

Can you tell me more about the STC 2 unit. How do you like it? Are the patients more cardiac observation patients (waiting for results back from tests?). Are they any post-op patients? Please tell me more about it :)

We get a lot of patients that are there to r/o cardiac problems, but they get all different kinds of patients.

They told me that they don't generally get post ops or anything like that, but when the hospital was full to capacity I know we got a couple of post ops that had to stay for further testing. The people on the floor are great, it's fairly fast paced too. The average patient load is 5 per nurse, we aren't supposed to get more than six, but since the average patient stay on the floor is so short, those 5 patients you started with may all leave to home or whatever floor they need to go to and you get 5 admits or something like that. So far I've gotten to fiddle with J-tubes, drains, and colostomies, but I haven't been on the floor all that long either. They will tell you that if you want a floor where you get to practice all of the skills you learned in school, this might not be the best floor for you, but they also have you float to other floors when there's low census. All of the beds are tele monitored and the majority of patients are on telemetry while they're on our floor.

Cool. Thanks for the description. I'll be visiting next week. Maybe I'll see you on the floor :)

I got to shadow on the floor for 2 hours last week. Great floor and everyone seems to work like a team.

Lovelymo79, how do you request to shadow on a floor? I am interested in doing the same thing since I'll be graduating in Dec and would like to check out the hospital before hand.

I contacted HR and just asked if I could shadow. I had already applied for the internship so they set it up where I got to shadow in my top 3 choices. Contact the recruiter K.B. She was so helpful.

Good luck!

Thank you for the advice! I will do just that...hope I will be able to shadow the floors like you. I have never been to that hospital so crossing my fingers that they will let me visit =)
