The University of Massachusetts Boston (UMassBoston) was founded in 1964 and is a public institution. UMassBoston is proud to be the 9th largest nursing school in the country and is recognized nationally as a model of excellence for urban public universities.

Undergraduate

Accelerated, BS

The accelerated BS degree is a 15-month intensive course of study for students who already hold an accredited baccalaureate degree in another disciple. The program includes adult learning styles and combines online, blended, and face-to-face classes. Additional requirements include the TEAS exam and mandatory accelerated nursing information session prior to the application deadline.

RN-BS

This program is designed for licensed and actively practicing RNs. Part-time and full-time options are available. The program can be completed in 3-5 semesters at a full time enrollment. There are options to participate online or face-to-face. The face-to-face program is available at Cape Cod Community College.

Admission Requirements (not all inclusive)

• Accredited Associate Degree in Nursing program or a hospital school Diploma program
• Current, valid RN license within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
• 2.5 GPA or higher
• Current citizen/permanent resident of the US with work authorization and residency in the US

NOTE: Currently, this program is only accepting applications from licensed Massachusetts RNs

Traditional, BS

Designed for students who are entering freshmen or transfer students, the traditional option is a 2.5 to 4 year commitment of academic study. Clinical rotations include placement at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Children's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Good Samaritan-Brockton, VA Medical Centers, and many others.

For Freshmen and Transfer admission, the average minimum GPA has been around 3.2 and 3.4, respectively, during the last few cycles.  A waiting list is generally created for a small group of students who are below the minimum GPA. Applicants may be offered acceptance to the secondary option if not accepted to Nursing. Transfer students are required to take the TEAS exam.

Graduate

• BS to DNP Program

Master of Science (MS)

The MS program is designed to prepare the student for the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) role. There are three tracks from which to choose:

• Adult-Gerontological Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (AGACCNS)
• Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
• Adult-Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (AGNP)

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

The focus is towards increasing the appropriate supply, diversity, and distribution of highly trained APRNs to meet emerging health care system needs. 

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)

This program is designed to incorporate nursing health policy and population health thus preparing graduates as leaders in analytics, research and education. There are four tracks within the program:

• BS to PhD Health Policy
• MS to PhD Health Policy
• BS to PhD Population Health
• MS to PhD Population Health

NEW:  Post-Doctoral Fellowship program in Cancer and Health Disparities - jointly sponsored by the college and the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center

Approval and Accreditation

Full approval status from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing is granted for the pre-licensure program.

The University of Massachusetts Boston is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.

Accreditation has been granted to the baccalaureate, master's, post-graduate APRN Certificate, and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
