Schools that accept nursing credits

Published

Does anyone know of any schools that accepts nursing credits as a transfer student? I failed out of a BSN program my senior semester and am trying to find a school that will accept some of my nursing courses so I do not have to start over from scratch. California schools are preferable, but I am also willing to go out of state if that is what it takes. I do understand that most programs will not accept nursing transfer credits, however I have seen several people post success stories of schools accepting their credits, so I know that it is possible with enough searching.

You will honestly have a hard time finding another school to accept you due to the failure, much less one that will accept the credits, especially in CA. Competition is fierce out there. Good luck but I have never seen a school that will accept the credits. I have spoken to several schools previously just because at one point I was thinking it might be financially feasible for me to do so. Any one I talked to said no. You are going to have to talk to advisors at schools for definite answers.

Edit* It will not show as a failing grade in my transcript, but a "W" for withdraw, if that makes a difference.

It won't. First question right off the bat is "why are you looking to transfer here in your final year rather than finish your current program?" And you will have to answer truthfully: you were dismissed.

Typically when people talk about having credits transfer, they are NOT talking about the core nursing classes, they are talking about pre-requisite courses and/or general ed courses that are acceptable to most if not all schools.

Nursing programs vary enough in curriculum and presentation, as well as timeline for dissemination of coursework that it's understandable that you wouldn't find School B accepting nursing courses completed at School A.

The problem, for the most part, isn't getting credits transferred, it's getting in the door at ALL: if you get accepted to a nursing school after having failed out of one, that's great news (happens, not common, but DOES happen). However.....I would expect that such a school WOULD require you to repeat he core components.

Another point that is vital to remember is that ANY university or college will have a minimum number of credits that MUST be earned at THAT school in order to receive a degree from that school. IOW, if you arrive in your senior year "needing" only 8 credits for a BS degree, you shouldn't be surprised to find that they will require you to complete 30 in order to be granted a degree from them. It's the norm: no one will give you a degree from any university without a minimum number of credits FROM them. After all....it's their name on the diploma.

Of course, I know that the school needs to make money as well. I am only looking for schools that will give me SOME credits for ANY core nursing classes I have taken so that I don't start all over from the beginning. I've done extensive browsing on this site so I know this is going to be a VERY difficult task. I also know that I will have to make numerous phone calls to see which nursing program will accept my nursing credits, and only the director will have the answer for me.

What I want to know is, has anyone out there been successful at finding a school that will accept some of the nursing classes previously taken from another program? If so, which schools did you attend? Thank you in advance for the responses.

I know that this probably won't be what you want to hear, but this is the experience of a friend of mine. She had a similar issue, failed in first semester of her senior year when we did our BSN together. She applied to every school in Michigan, and never got accepted. The reason: none of them would take transfer credit, especially since she had flunked out. Schools have statistics on how many students successfully complete their programs and successfully pass NCLEX. Since she had failed a class, this was high probability (in the admission committee's minds) that it would happen again in a different program. The only school that conditionally accepted her said that she would need to start over, and that was if she could pass an extra pre-req to their program that we didn't have to take. She ended up going to an ADN program in a different state. That is the last I ever heard from her.

My advice is don't give up regardless. If you really want to be a nurse, you'll get there. Keep trying to find a program that will take transfer, but if they don't, at least find one that will give you a second shot. Prove to the admissions committee that you deserve a second chance.

Good Luck,

Whats different about your situation is that you arent just a transfer student. You are dismissed from a program for 2 clinical failures. The only good side is that you were doing well in theory. You will literally jut have to call schools and explain your situation to see if they will accept you at all, let alone your nursing core credits. Since you didnt fail theory, there wont be an issue of fear of you not passing NCLEX. I have confidence in saying you have good odds of passing that first. What will worry the school will be your safety in practice. May want you to start over compeletyl just to make sure you get the clinical practice down. But maybe not. One person who goes to a school who accepted their transfer credit may not accept yours. Best bet is to call around. Be prepared for a lot of "No"s, but if you don't call you will never find the "yes". This will not be easy.

Thank you Dan! I will keep trying. I will not give up on my dream =)

What school would allow her into the program with the extra pre req? This school may be an option for my friend.

Hi, I am not sure that you are still looking for nursing school that accept nursing credits. A friend of my friend failed ADN program at a community college and she couldn’t return back due to there was limited seating available. Only some students can return back. Some were allowed to transfer their nursing credit to LVN program of that school and some needed to start all over at other nursing schools. This my friend’s friend found that International College of Health Sciences Florida, www.ichs.edu or call 1 561 2026333 accepted all nursing credits.  She transferred her nursing credit there and continue in ADN program until she finished. Now, she is waiting for RN NCLEXs exam schedule in California. However, she had to fly to Florida every semester for her clinical for 2 weeks and she had to  pass NCLEXs exam in Florida in order to taking  NCLEXs in California. That girl, she passed all classes easily without any trouble. I think it is probably she studied in private college. Some private college or university have the tutors for nursing students and allow them to fail a couple times, such as WCU. One of my friend decided to study the nursing program at WCU in this month because the counselor told her that she have 2 chances to repeat class.
