schooling in oz-public or private?

Private and public schools can be pretty similar, often it's a matter of resources for students and the quality of the teachers. There are public schools around that offer I'd say better education but its mainly luck of the draw. The area you are in makes a big difference, if an area has a bad reputation for crime then the quality of the teacher that takes up the positions offered will be a lot less. Good teachers can pretty much take their pick of the public schools they apply for (once they have done their country service) so they usually pick the upper class areas because they know that there is a good chance they will get decent quality kids going there. Go with the public system if you're in a good neighbourhood/catchment area since most likely you'll get good teachers. If where you live is a little dodgier then it would be worth your while going into the private system.

Although private schooling is becoming more common, most kids tend to go to public schools.

My husband and I also faced the private school/public school debate, and decided to public. We spent the money we saved on great family holidays, which were an education in themselves.

I am a recent product of Public Education- and my education was as good as, if not better than, my friends who attended private/christian schools. It does depend on the area in which you live. Best bet- visit the schools in the area when trying to decide.

I think the public/private school debate is the same everywhere. If you find a school you like, i dont think it will matter!!

I find your comment; "the quality of the teacher that takes up the positions offered will be less", rather unfair and insulting to those wonderful people who dare to take on challenging placements. There is many disadvantaged schools doing wonderful work and achieving stellar results.

Littleflower123, Always bear in mind, the quality of any school and/or it's teachers is only as good as the students they try to educate. What I mean by this statement is; no matter how "good' any educational insitution is, if the student isn't interested in learning, which school he/she attends isn't going to make much difference. I've seen even the most disadvantaged child, in supposedly most disreputable school, achieve success over and beyond others from more affluent, and so called "better" schools. And, all because the child wanted to learn and was committed to learning.

As joannep wrote; they spent the money saved, (by sending the children to public schools), on great family holidays. No better education than travel! :)
