Can someone please let me know if I should tell my school that I had a criminal past, in order to apply for the nursing program?

I am in the process of trying to get my record expunged, and after this happens should I tell them that this criminal past did happen, or should I check no on the application, and forget all about it?

If it is not expunged when you are sending in the application, then you cannot withhold information. It is grounds for termination from a program for not giving truthful information, the best that you know of, at the time that you submit your application.

So if the record is expunged, should I still tell the school of my past, on the application, or just forget it?

Unfortunately, even if you get in and complete the program. Any criminal past information will prevent you from going to boards. It would be best to be honest and get it cleared up. I'm not sure for other schools but the one I attend checks and validates your information before you can apply to take your exam. Good luck to you.

You should be honest. I know for my school one fo our professors told us to disclose everything. Even if it was a shoplifting charge from when you were 10. If you have any questions you should call the BON in your state NOW, not later.

WHy would any criminal past prevent you from going to boards? This isn't true. I recommend the original poster to read up on the "EXPUNGEMENT" post not long ago. It contains a lot of information about this. Also, getting your record expunged basically means that it didn't happen, but I'd talk to your BON BEFORE you go to school (get it in writing), and go after being a nurse! Don't listen to the people who might try to discourage you!

I think it is best to be honest from the get go. You shouldn't be treated any different so just in case you might want to disclose it.

I just want to say that I was going by what we were told in my program. I know that our program has to validate etc information before you can apply to sit for the boards. I had no intention to DISCOURAGE anyone! I was not referring to any shoplifting charges etc. from when you were ten. Honesty is the best policy. If you have any concerns check with your school and the board of nursing in your state.

The board of nursing for my state clearly says that the board has the right and power to refuse anyone with a felony charge based on when, what and the nature of the crime. If you look up your board it may have a link to legal questions for more information. Again, my previous post was not intended to discourage anyone, simply stating what the policy is for my program.

Each state is different and BON can set their onw rules. If the record has not been expunged, it still exists, and to with hold that information would be grounds for being removed from school.

Again, we cannot and do not give legal advice here. But being in the process of doing something and having it done are two different things.
