school nursing

Published

I may be starting a new job as a school nurse. I am a new grad and the school offers a lot of support. I will never be by myself. One thing I am worried about is it is contracted. So I am not always guaranteed a job. But I am desperate right now. A lot of the hospitals only have new grad programs once a year (which is ridiculous).

My question is what have people done about insurance. I will not be benefited..unless I choose to be. I can make 26 an hour as benefited or 32.50 without benefits but not insurance. Just don't know if its worth it. I am going to spend time later tonight looking up insurance.

Any tips you can give me about school nursing would be greatly appreciated. I was REALLY hoping to get into a hospital. I feel a little sad because I will be loosing out on so much experience and what if its hard to get into a hospital after only have school nursing? There is a hospital with a new grad program in December near me so I will apply to that.

Specializes in School Nurse.

If at all possible, shadow a nurse in the district so you can see SOME of the situations you might encounter throughout the day. Read and research as much about school nursing as possible. There is a great website call WishesProject.org that has algorithms listed under protocols that address some of the issues you may see. Good Luck!

can i ask why you are choosing the school nurse position over the nursing home position? i am applying to nursing school and i had thought that starting in a nursing home would be a good back up plan since new grad hospital positions are hard to come by. although i do volunteer at a hospital in CA and they DO have new grad positions posted for nights and you have to work every weekend, but it's something! maybe the tides are turning...

I have a friend that works at the nursing home and she told me to be careful. That there are a lot of shady things and that worries me.

Hi OP which position did you end up choosing?

Hi OP which position did you end up choosing?

Starting two jobs next week.. A homecare position with a girl who has a gtube and the school nurse position. Did you just graduate?

I graduated a few months ago, but recently passed my NCLEX. I'll be starting work soon as a school nurse.

Ill be starting as a 1:1 school nurse so im a little nervous. They mentioned that I will have a day of orientation and that they want to make sure I feel confortable since I will be alone. I believe I will be working with Diabetic patients and G-tubes. And that I could always be re-oriented as much times if I needed it. And also that I will have a number to call an experienced RN anytime.

For the school nursing position, did they say there will be another nurse in the room or that you will have a number you can always call?
