School Closings

Published

Not for sure if you guys heard about all the school closing like Med Tech, Brown Mackie and ITT. 2 of those are the main schools where students get an LPN and ITT wasn't accredited but you could still sit for your RN boards. From what I here those where the some of the main schools nursing homes hired from. So now with those closing there are only 2 LPN programs in the city. I feel like they are finally trying to phase out the LPN role. I feel like we will have a huge shortage in long term care more then ever now. Thoughts?

I feel they were a rip off. Students go into high debt trying to attend those schools. It is not worth 25,000 for an LPN program. I attend Ivy Tech and they have an excellent LPN and RN program for a lot less. They cannot possibly phase out the LPN role in long term care.

I hope not! We need all the nurses we can get.

They were not the two main LPN programs. Those schools were a scam and very few people hire from there. I am so very glad they were shut down as they needed to be. It has nothing to do with phasing out LPNs. It has to do with people getting a subpar education and paying out the nose for it. $30k for an LPN? They will never make that money back in return, never. Their NCLEX pass rates were horrendous.

There is a nursing shortage here for both RN and LPN. But the shut down of those schools is the best news I had heard all day!!

Thank you! That's what I try to explain to people! They just get people for their money. I graduated from Ivy Tech and I am now an LPN with less debt than any other school.

Most LPN's I know went to Brown Mackie or Med Tech.....

I heard about the closings. Although everyone says that hardly anywhere hires from these schools, I know that it is not true. Everyone that my wife knew and graduated with from medtech had jobs within a month of passing their nclex. I agree and so does my wife that her school was not well managed and the price was way steep, it is not uncommon for people to hire from for profit schools like them. My wife is in a transitional program for her BSN now. She is also happy that medtech is shutting down. She has never had such a disorganized and expensive experience in her life. Anyway that you cut it, $25,000 is a bad investment for an associate's degree. I would not recommend the for profit route. We went ahead and took the expense because we were desperate and needed her to get a career started. It has paid off for us, but unfortunately I think her situation is a rare one. The pass rates for medtech are garbage. Getting her ASN has been the best thing for our family thus far.

Brown Mackie a brand of Education Management Corporation closing shop and or teaching out. Well publicized on the net from official sources.

Med tech I don't know nor care.

Friends these days you have to know the finances of these for-profits before you let them access your precious loan money. Many of these schools forget to tell you about their questionable finances, often leaving students high and dry with crushing debt. See Corinthian and now ITT tech, but there are many others throughout the country.

As for the nursing shortage, given the way every Tom, Dick and Harry nurse-a-thon school spews out nurses, that problem should have been solved years ago.

Don't believe the jive, come-on and especially be very wary of the schools who are really in the loan business.

Be careful. To them you are merely a number.

I went to BMC and graduated with around $15,000 in debt. That was about 10 years ago. Back then the options were limited in the area. I have had NO issue with getting any jobs despite attending there. I agree it had it's issues, but let me tell you that ALL colleges have issues. I am a student at Ivy Tech now to transition to an ADN. It's a pretty good program, but again it has flaws. Often the flaws have nothing to do with the program, but outside things that have nothing to do with the program (clinical sites changing their availability, new changes to regulations, etc). Ivy Tech is also by far one of the least expensive options locally which is great since I still owe a few thousand from my PN program.

I think that these schools closing is going to have a serious impact for those looking to become an LPN. Current programs are going to have an even larger pool of students to chose from. I hope another legit school opens soon. I heard Bethel College is trying to capture students and help them out, but they as SUPER expensive as well.

I dont think ivy tech having clinical changes fits into this subject. Because IUPUI has their clinical availability change often & so does Marian. I'm pretty sure every nursing school does , seeing as it's not at the schools disgression but at the clinical sites'
