Hi. Does anyone know if there are scholarships offered for a person living in one state but going to school in another state? I live in Maryland but am going to a nursing school in Virginia. Most of the scholarships I find on fastweb and other sites all have the main criteria that "you live in Maryland and attend a Maryland institution". Please help!

you may want to look at your home state (va) dept of labor website to see if they participate in the workforce investment act (wia). they are some eligibility requirements but they offer funds for training for individuals that are going back to school to pursue a career in "high demand".
i live in ga and will be relocating to ny to start school this fall. i was not eligible for nys aid because i'm not a resident but i will get funds from wia to help with the cost of tuition ($5000 for a one-year program, $8000 for a two year). each state has its own cap.
the funds do not have to be repaid. according to ga, the system has received additional monies to help people become educated and more marketable since obama signed the recovery act. good luck :wink2:

Have you checked with your state to see if MD offers any state-funded scholarships to attend nursing school? My state offers three different programs, and I used one of them to attend grad school out of state. There are also some national foundations that provide nursing school scholarships unrelated to location (yours or the school's :)).
Have you checked with the financial aid office of your school? They are usually good sources of info (usually better than just searching on your own on the 'Net, since they've been doing this, specifically, for a long time, and have a lot of "insider" info).
Best wishes!

Good luck with finding some scholarships. Are students going to school in a different state able to get Financial Aid from the new institution? This is something I hadn't thought about and I'm looking at going to a school out of state since Phoenix has such a long wait list to get in.
dannie78-financial aid is federally funded so as long as you are going to school in the us you would qualify providing you meet other eligibility criteria. good luck. i had to relocate too due to long waiting lists.
Sending you a private message, check it please :)
Thank you all so much!
happiness10466 - did you contact GA dept of labor about the WIA or New York state? I called Maryland dept of labor which is where I live and they told me I have to speak to the Senator of my district. I'm watiting on a call back from someone.
Dannie78 - how do I check private messages? I'm new to this site!
You have to have 15 post prior to being able to access them. I learned that this morning :)
I originally called NY thinking since thats where I would be going to school they would be the ones to help me but I was told its where you live-for me GA. I'm not sure why you would have to speak to a senator but each state does it different. Maybe try VA as well and see what they say. You can also ask your school financial aid office. Many of the schools are familiar with the program and can guide you to the right steps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Thank you! I called VA and they said they don't have any such fundings available. I'm not sure if the lady knew what she was talking about lol. I will call again on Monday. I need some serious assistance with finances. My tuition is about $25k and because the RN program is not nationally accredited as of yet, there are no educational loans available which is what I would need since I have a bachelor's degree already and that makes me ineligible to receive Pell or any financial aid at all:-(
i would definitely call va again and ask if they have a training/education department and speak to someone there. that's where i started at here. also follow up on monday with maryland and last but not least, ask the school if they are familiar with the program and get info from them. i understand your pain, getting into nursing school is stressful enough, and now looking for assistance with tuition is another headache. let me know how it worked out.
fyi-although it's too late for this year (i wasn't able to apply either), there is a scholarship available through hrsa that you may want to look into for next year. this scholarship is fantantasic!!! they pay your tuition, books, fees, uniform expenses and even provide a monthly stipend. i think this year the amount was $1200. the only thing that you have to do in return is work in an area that is underserved which is pretty much any hospital for two years for every year of payment. this is the website: http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/scholarship/.
you can go online and sign up for an email alert to get info for the next application year when it becomes available. i hope it works out for you.
