San Antonio Nursing Program Questions

Published

How's it going everyone I'm new to the website but have been reading articles from here for a long time. I'm looking to apply for some schools in San Antonio, Texas fairly soon and just wanted to give you guys my GPA and general info and if y'all think I have a chance of getting into a program. My overall GPA as of July 2017 is 3.11 and I am just begging for my Science courses right now. I have yet to take my TEAS yet. I'm looking at applying to UTHSC and UIW. I am unsure of SAC has a BSN program but those are my two options as of now. I am scared because I don't think my overall GPA or Science GPA will be good enough. But let me know what yalls GPAs and stuff was when you applied or if you've had experiences with these schools before. Thanks.

UIW is really, really expensive. I haven't looked into their program, because I just can't justify the cost.

San Antonio College offers an Associate's degree - it's a community college (where I did my pre-reqs).

Baptist Health System also has an Associate's degree program, then they offer a bridge to BSN - I don't think they are accredited, though I do think they offer contracts and tuition assistance for their bridge participants. It's pricier than SAC's program. I didn't apply here.

UT Health is my top choice, good price point, though their NCLEX pass rates have been a bit iffy the past few grad cycles, they did talk about the changes they were making at their information session (there's another one next week, on Wednesday - they answer your questions and give you a facility tour), and this last round their scores went up.

I'm applying to SAC as a backup along with UT Health. If I don't get into UT Health, I'll do my ADN and bridge at UT Health (fingers crossed).

It's hard to say now if you are competitive, because you haven't completed your sciences. A *lot* rides on those grades. My overall GPA is 3.7 and my math/science GPA is 3.3. I got a 82.7 on my TEAS VI.

If I can make a recommendation - take A&P I/II at Northeast Lakeview (it's a San Antonio College campus) with Kosub, and Micro with Strain - both are excellent teachers that made learning really, really fun. Kazen was a good teacher for Nutrition, too. I have other recommendations (or teachers to avoid) if you want more information.

My advice is to get those pre-req's out of the way at SAC and do the very best you can.

Let me know if you need more info. I'm FINALLY applying and hoping to start in January.

I'll definitely keep those science courses up as best I can and study for the TEAS. I met with a UIW advisor today and she said I qualify for 10K in scholarship every year so that will actually take the cost down a lot.

Oh that's great! Also make sure you fill out your FAFSA.

Baptist is an accredited program.
