Samuel Merritt Prereqs

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I applied to Samuel Merritt's BSN program for April and May 2009. Do you guys know the cheapest route to fulfill the pharmacology and pathophysiology prereqs by April? I think it would have to be a self-directed program, not a semester long program because most do not end until late May. I looked at Indiana and Iowa State, but they're very expensive. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

I also am going to apply in April for Sam Merritt, anyone who has taken online Pharm somewhere other than Barstow? I found the Barstow one to be a joke, it was cheap and short, but I learned nothing. I figure that if I show up in nursing school knowing nothing about pharmacology I might get far behind very fast. I am about to finish the 9 week session and think that I will end up taking it again somewhere else because I think it sucks so bad. Plus the teacher has not lecture or powerpoint, just a rough outline each week. And it seems like the test questions are taken from random sentences in each chapter that are not the most pertinent information...plus the final is proctored. I would shy away if I were any of you looking to take the Pharm at Barstow. Unless you want to learn nothing...then its okay.

Hey are you in the 9 week class with Professor Headrick?? I am taking that class right now and you are right it sucks!!!! I am going to re-take it again sometime in the future too.

I just tried to register for the UCLA class and it said full :( I'm going to call to get put on the waitlist.

I took Pharmacology online through Long Beach City College (and I live in northern California). The instructor, Faye Gregory, was great and I really learned a lot in her class. There are 3 proctored exams during the course (a med math exam, a drug final, and a "concept" final).

I'm at SMC, and I took patho through Yuba City College ($16/unit), and a couple of classmates took it through SBCC. It won't give you good patho skills overnight, but it'll give you enough of a background to get in the game.

I took Barstow's pharm class a couple of years ago, and for $16/unit I got to take the course while living in the Bay Area, from a cc in Socal, and it was taught by an Army medic in Atlanta. God Bless the internet:)

Hey, I'm enrolled in the UCLA ext. for the Patho class that starts this January. Did you order the book from them or were you able to purchase the book at a lower price somewhere else? The book is about $100 through UCLA's website.

I am enrolled in the UCLA class too, but I haven't looked into the book yet. I will probably just try to find it online or at the library. I'll keep you posted.

For someone who has taken or registered for the Barstow Pharmacology class, are there prerequisites? I am admitted to the university and I gues if there are no prereqs for the class, then I don't have to send transcripts. I didn't see any prereqs on the website, but I just wanted to make sure. Does anyone know?

Thanks!

No preqrequisites for the class at Barstow. I am currently taking the Pharmacology class right now.

Just for the record, I am taking the pharm class thru Barstow CC and it is HORRIBLE. It's the worst class I have ever taken, and probably the most important class. If anyone has the opportunity to take a pharm class that is longer than 8 weeks, I definitely recommend that. Cramming hundreds of drugs into 8 weeks is ridiculous. On top of that, the teacher tries to make the quizzes extra hard, by asking vague questions with more than one correct answer. Just a tip...for what it's worth.

good luck!

Sorry to hear that. :o I'm taking pharmacology at Foothill College with Angela Su and she's wonderful. Not only that, she's a Registered Pharmacist, so she really knows what she's talking about. Highly recommend her! Very fair, very organized! It isn't an easy class, but you do learn alot! Pharmacology for us is just scratching the surface! Can you imagine what Pharmacists have to go through???

I'm taking that class right now too! I agree with you about it being horrible, probably the worst online class ever. The professor doesn't even interact with the discussions or anything.

Have you taken the final yet? I am so stressed about it....it's 100 points and she can't remember how many questions are on it. I'm taking it on Thursday and I know for a fact that I will not be able to memorize all those drugs and all 40 something chapters!

AS27,

I have not taken the final yet. I am petrified!

It's such a bummer because I was really looking forward to this class. I feel like she is just trying to weed us out instead of teaching us what we need to know. I am definitely going to complain after the class because I feel it is very unfair. The least she could do is provide an outline of what to study, rather than just say: everything in the chapters is game! and the math portion is so ridiculous - there is no text and she only provides one example. and we are suppose to learn from that?

It really makes me mad!!!
