Samuel Merritt ELMSN FNP FALL 2020 Oakland

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hello fellow applicants, alumni, and SMU associates,

Can anyone provide insight into the application timeline for SMU's ELMSN-FNP program intended to start Fall 2020 (Oakland cohort)? The deadline to submit applications through NursingCAS was December 1, 2019.

-When should we expect correspondence to interview or for denial?

-Are interviews 1:1 or mixed, or both?

-When do final acceptances usually go out?

Thank you all.

Hi all!

I'm currently #6 on the waitlist. I'm wondering if it's still worth waiting? I got into an MDE NP-track school on the east coast but would love to stay close to home (from Bay area) as I plan on working in the Bay area after nursing school.

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted!

CONGRATS on getting into another program! I think your best bet is to contact -------------------- from Admissions to get a more realistic update on the waiting list. There seems to be about a full class based on the class facebook page but IDK if that means there aren’t available openings still. Good luck!

If you were accepted into the ELMNS-CM track, I would say wait because lots of students get accepted from the waitlist; however, I don't see that happen much from the FNP track. You are pretty far down the list as well. It is more common to be accepted from the FNP program up to waitlist #3. In light of COVID-19, there might be more students who decide not to attend such an expensive program or uncertain nursing school experience, so this year might be different. If I were you, I would say it depends on what you believe in your heart is best for you and whenever you have to declare your intent to accept admission into the school. At SMU, you are given 2 weeks to declare your intent at least the years before 2020. Also what were the reason you applied to this other school? Some students are so eager to apply to other schools, but later find out that they really didn't want to attend. Usually because of the life transitions they would have to make to travel. To be honest, more and more nursing students in California end up having to travel outside of the state to find job opportunities for up to 6 months to 1 year for experience and come back to California to get the dream job they want. If you are concerned about working out here, don't worry.

Usually the students who decline our school do so because the school is too expensive and decided to attend a cheaper school usually BSN program or ADN program, they were accepted into another ELMNS program they felt was their school of choice, or they were accepted into a PA program which was their program of choice.

I hope this helps! You may have other people give you another option, and you should consider them all.

Thank you so much for your advice! So glad some people replied.

I applied to several ELMSN schools because there were not many ELMSN NP track schools, I was open to going out of state, and I wanted to cast a wider net in terms of applying to schools. I did not get into my top choice and SMU is my number two choice. The school I got accepted into was the only program I got accepted to.

COVID-19 situation has changed my financial perspective as my living expenses would be cheaper if I went to SMU since I have family that live close by there.

Hi @mmbicoshake! I went from #3 to #1 on the waitlist. So, I understand what you’re feeling! I thought more movement would occur but perhaps the state of the world has everyone in limbo. Anyhow, I would take the opportunity you have and plan to license in CA when you graduate from back East. CONGRATS on the acceptance elsewhere!

Hello everyone,

I'm in the Entry Level Masters-FNP Program. I'm always getting asked by prospective students or pre-nursing students questions about accelerated nursing programs or entry level master programs.

I go in on my first time around, but so many students who did not get accepted or were wait listed frequently are left without reason for why they didn't get in or how they can improve their application.

If you are interested in learning how to be a competitive applicant? Please reach out to me. I have lots of tips to offer that I believe can help. If you all have any ideas, please send them to me. I feel there is a need for students to know more about this pathway other than the generic program requirements.

Again, if you are interested or no other students who might be interested let them know. I am open to doing a 1:1 session for of little charge. I also will be creating webinars in the coming months. I have a strong interest in studying nursing school admissions and pre-nursing student success.

Message me through this platform.

Hi Heaven27,

Did you ever create those webinars? Are you still doing 1:1 sessions?

@ Tiiinnnaaa, Could you please provide me with a list of questions that you have or common questions that students have about Entry Level Masters in Nursing programs and the ELMNS program at SMU?

My classmates and I will be putting together a webinar/powerpoint. We have still been working on it for sometime. Our program will have Summer Break in July. I hope this is when we can begin offering these services.

Hello,

Hello everyone. Could you all please message me personally any questions you have at Master's of Nursing programs or the SMU ELMNS program? My classmates and I would like to hear what the most common questions are about these types of program so we can create a webinar or powerpoint on it.

These questions can include anything from the HESI admission exam, prerequistes that make students stand out, best majors, GPA, all the way to what the program is like. *THIS IS FOR STUDENTS WHO DID NOT GET ACCEPTED INTO THE PROGRAM.

I am a student in the ELMNS-FNP track.

I'm so glad to hear this Michelle! CONGRATS. Yes, if you are waitlisted, you really never know especially with Covid-19. Also there is uncertainty about the program being online and some students may pass on the offer and wait it out. Also some students will take opportunities from other places.

Hey all!

I recently was accepted into the SMU ELMSN Spring 2020 cohort in Sacramento. I’m reaching out to those who were accepted and started this fall 2020 with COVID in play. How has the program treated you so far? Has this entire time been virtual? Have y’all gone in for any practicals or clinicals?

My main concern/thoughts at the moment are if I should move immediately closer to Sac or wait it out for a semester or two if everything is virtual. I currently live and work in San Francisco and am evaluating options. If it weren’t for COVID, I would not hesitate to move, but just want to get a general feel for what is to come as you all are the first cohort to start virtually. I would be ever so appreciative to hear any feedback.

Cheers!

@mchoicmt Congrats on getting in!

The program has been extremely challenging for a number of reasons (amount of material is no joke, online connections and navigating Webex, change of schedules constantly, keeping meeting links updated, etc.) but I'd say stick to your location for now. We have only had one face to face sim lab (campus closed often d/t smoke from fires) and the rest has been exclusively online. And SMU will be online for the Spring. Perhaps move in the Summer? That would be my suggestion given what our fall semester has been thus far. Hope this helps!
