Hi Everyone! I know this is a bit early but I will be applying to SMU for the ABSN program of Summer 2014 (Oakland Campus). I am currently finishing my Bachelor's degree in health science at CSUEB right now and I will be done in the fall. I just wanted to start a discussion on this topic and get to know some people who are applying to the program for summer 2014. Let's get to know each other, share our stats, etc.
Here are my estimated stats that they look at:
Last 60 units GPA: 3.5
Pre req GPA: 3.4
Teas: 83 but I am re taking it in a couple of weeks
Experience: I am a CNA and Med tech currently. I volunteer at John Muir hospital and at American Red Cross.
I hope to hear from some prospective applicants soon!
Same here! Need to finish them up in the next couple weeks. Did u notice that the application is now all electronic? It's frustrating because my letters are all already finished with the paper forms and have been mailed to me so I guess I have to submit them separately. So confusing! I just want everything to be submitted and done. What is your bachelors in? I am actually finishing my degree this dec in health science. Hopefully that won't count against me. Look forward to chatting more!
Yes I recently saw the application is all electronic! I slightly freaked out because I had already given the paper forms to my recommenders and didn't want to ask them to re-do their recommendations electronically. I also didn't really want to to a partial paper / partial electronic application. I emailed E and she said they will still accept paper applications so I think I'm just going to go with that so that everything is together.
My bachelors is in dietetics and I've been working as a dietitian in dialysis for the past 10 years. I've looked into doing this program every year for the past 4 years or so and always decided against it because of the cost but its really what I want to do so I've decided to go for it!
I'm sure the fact that you are still finishing up your degree wont count against you - from what I've heard they look at the whole package so as long as you are well rounded you'll be fine :)
That's a good idea. I didn't think of that. I definitely don't want things getting misplaced!! It sounds like you have plenty of experience so that's great! I feel like everyone that applies to this program is so much more ahead of me since its a second bachelors. I couldn't get into any traditional bsn programs so I decided this route was better. I've heard they do look at everything all together so that's good! I cant believe we have to wait so long to find out tho:(
Hi everyone!
I thought I'd be notified when people commented back, but apparently not! :)
My stats are:
84% TEAS, with 90.5 in math and 90.0 in reading (Science really brought me down).
My last 60 units are around 3.9
Science pre-reqs are at 3.5
I got my BA in psychology in May 2012. I have been working as a medical scribe in the ER for the past 6 months to try to get some "experience."
I'm super excited to be applying but am VERY nervous because this is the only program I am applying for.... I don't know if I'll be able to wait 4 months to hear an answer, ha!
Hi Everyone,
I am also applying summer 2014 ABSN San Mateo. I'm glad I read this as I printed out the Application awhile ago and did not realize they changed it to an electronic version since then. I'm also having the same issue with the recommendation letters.. not sure if I want to ask recommenders to redo them or if I should send them in separately.
TEAS Math: 90.0
TEAS Reading: 97
Overall: 89.5
Science GPA is 3.0, haven't calculated last 60 yet.
The lady at the info sessions did say that the waiting period would decrease once they switched over to online apps!

Hi Melissa,
MM im not sure. Depends how you look at it. The stats for 2011 show that summer had the most people accepted but also had the most applicants. I think we all are intent on finding out our potential odds. I'm not sure if you went to a info session but the lady (cant remember her name) did say that they had many spots available and as long as you were in the average group that has around the same qualifications, gpa, teas, etc, yours odds would be good.
Hi Spatel! I hope you're right! I went to the informational meeting in Sacramento about a year ago before I started my pre reqs.
Rachllynn, I don't have too much experience. I've been working in an ER in Sacramento as a medical scribe doing charting for physicians. It's been a great learning experience and has given me the chance to learn medical terminology and about different medical conditions. Do you have any experience? I'm curious how much they want, seeing most of us have degrees in other fields.

Hi Rachelynn,
Yay a fellow Oakland applicant! I am still working on my writing samples - hope to finish them up in the next week or so. I'm also waiting on one of my letters of recommendation to be returned. I felt like I started working on this application with plenty of time but now I feel like I'm scrambling to get it all done - ugh! Is your app ready to go?
I am at work right now and don't have my stats with me so will post them later when I get home.
